Genealogy information from the descendants of Betty's parents indicates that Betty was a daughter of the family who died as an infant.
Since Betty is not listed as part of the family in the 1860, 1870, or 1880 censuses and since her parents were married on January 14, 1856, she very well could have been their first child: 9 months after January 1856 is September 1857. Her brother Jasper was born in September 1858, which means he was conceived in January 1858. If Betty lived until January and if Emily was nursing her, it would be unlikely that she could have become pregnant with Jasper in January 1858. However, we now have evidence that Jasper had a wetnurse. (See "Notes" for Jasper Briles.) Thus, if Emily was not able to nurse Betty in January 1858, she could have gotten pregnant with Jasper even though Betty was still alive.
