Melinda Hawkins
(3 Feb 1782 - 2 Aug 1865)
The proof that this Melinda, daughter of Gaylord Hawkins and Hannah Brown as shown in "A Hawkins Genealogy 1638-1939, Record of the Descendants of Robert Hawkins of Charlestown, MA" by Ralph Clymer Hawkins published 1939 page 248, is the same Melinda Hawkins mentioned in the death certificate of her daughter Ruth (see above) is based on the story that the youngest of Melinda's sons, Phineas Philips Bresee, was given to an aunt, Mrs. Phineas Philips, to be raised as a young child. This story is documented in "Phineas F. Bresee: a Prince in Israel" by Rev. E. A. Girvin, page 26. In the Hawkins genealogy it shows that Melinda's older sister Ruth married a Mr. Philips. This Ruth must be the aunt that raised the child, Phineas Philips Bresee.
1887 deposition for his Civil War benefits (see file JohnJBresee.jpg) dated 11 May 1887 by her son, John J. Bresee, mentions that his mother died in the home of his sister in Scotand Co.
E-mail from Rik Vigeland dated Jan 1999 shows Elisabeth Bresse, wife of Caleb Crandall, and a Malinda Bresse in the same cemetery in Musgrove, Scotland Co., MO. Melinda died 2 Aug 1865, age 82 years, 6 months, 3 days (born 31 Jan 1783. He states that cemetery records shows Elizabeth was born 7 Mar 1780 (daughter of John C. Bresee). This must be Malinda, daughter-in-law of John C. Bresee and Elisabeth Rossman and wife of Jerremiah. Source is from "History of Lewis, Knox, and Scotland Counties, MO" dated 1887 at the downtown LA Library.
1865 death date from headstone showing age at 82 years, 6 months, 3 days then her birth date would be 30 JAN 1783. See posting by Rik Vigeland dated 27 Feb 2008 on GenForm Re: Jeremiah Bresee, 1776-1826 stating head stone info. "Cemetery Inscriptions of Scotland County Missouri, Volume III" by Eugene Dodge, 1971. It has only 23 listings, so it's got to be small, and I hope it's still there. It is within a mile or two of Crandall land claims.
1860 census for Sand Hill, Scotland Co., MO shows her as age 78 (born 1782 in CT) living with Caleb and Almyra Crandall (her daughter) and child Henrietta age 16 born in MO. Next door is Jeremiah Crandall age 31 born in OH and his family and a William H. Bresee age 14 (born 1846 in IL).
1850 census for Rock Run, Stephenson Co., IL shows her age 70 (born 1780 in CT) living with John J. Breese age 41 (born 1809 in NY and her son) with Elizabeth age 7 (born 1843 in IL) and William age 4 (born 1846 in IL). Parents of the children is unknown.
1839 a Malinda Brazie is shown of a list of "Members Made Out" of the Lutheran Church of the town of Summit at Lutheranville, Schonahie Co., NY, along with Peter Brazie and Miss Rachel Brazie. This should mean she left the church that year (see e-mail from Pat Gilbert dated 25 Mar 2003).
1830 census for Davenport, Delaware Co., NY, shows a Belmira Bresee 15-20 living with a female 40-50. This could well be daughter Almira age 20 and her mother Melinda age 47. Near by is a David Brisco 30-40 and his family which is Melinda's son. 1830 census for Jefferson, Richland Co., Ohio shown Caleb G. Crandall, Almira's husband, age 20-30, a female age 20-30 (must be Almira) and a male child age 0-5 (this must be Jeremiah their son). Living near by is Caleb Crandal age 40-50 (must be her father-in-law).
1827 - Letters of Administration, recorded 6 April 1827, were granted to Malinda Brezee and Stephen Olmstead (RootsMagic #929) on the estate of Jeremiah Brezee late of Davenport, deceased. Pat Gilbert's e-mail dated 14 July 2002, shows that Stephen Olmstead and Jeremiah Bresee were brothers-in-law, in that Jeremiah's sister Catherine Bresee married Stephen's brother Roger Olmsted (RootsMazgic #701) in 1813, thus the friendship between Melinda and Stephen. Stephen Olmstead was a school teacher and held public office as assessor and town clerk. He was a veteran of the War of 1812.
1826 - Material received 6/1/1997 from C.G. Brisee: Evangelical Lutheran Church in the town of Summit, Schonahie County, NY, records deaths or burials of those who were not members of the church and shows death of Jeremiah Brazee on Dec 26, 1826, per unpublished church records, source: DAR of NYS 1940-41, Vol 154, pg. 226. Also per rootsweb.com for Lutheran Church, Summit, Schoharie Co., NY shows marriage of her son, David Brazee to Harriet Brooks on 29 April 1826.
1825 - Evangelical Lutheran Church's, in the town of Summit, record of confirmation by Rev. Perry G. Cole on 20 Feb. 1825 of Mrs. Melinda Brazie. The church started about 1822. See LDS film 1293955 Item 5, page 16.
1821 land records shows David Brezee grantee and Jeremiah Brezee grantor of part of lot #19 of the Charlotte River patent with Malenda Brazee, wife (recorded 4 Jan. 1825 in Deed Book G page 69 and 72 film 557787).
1817 On March 31, 1817 the town of Davenport, Delaware Co., NY, was created from parts of the older towns of Kortright and Maryland, Otsego Co., NY. On April 8, 1817 the first town meeting was held. On 26 April 1817 when the Davenport School Board met for the purpose of forming the school districts, Jeremiah Bresee's farm formed a corner of the School Districts #4-5 being on the south side of the Charlotte River.
1816 land records recorded 5 Feb 1827 on the estate of Jeremiah Bresee, deceased, establish that he and Melinda Bresee sold part of Lot #20 of the Charlotte River patent on the north side of the Charlotte River to Harmonas Bresee on 6 May 1816 as witnessed by David Bresee and Steven Olmstead. Jeremiah Bresee was of the town of Maryland, Otsego Co. at the time (Deed Book page 91 film 557788).
1793 Oxford, parish of Derby, first incorporated as a town October 1793 and was taken from Derby.
1783 birth date is based on E-mail from Rik Vigeland dated Jan 1999 shows Elisabeth Bresse, wife of Caleb Crandall, and a Malinda Bresse in the same cemetery in Musgrove, Scotland Co., MO. Melinda died 2 Aug 1865, age 82 years, 6 months, 3 days (born 18 June 1783).

Notes
Birth
1782 birth date of 3 Feb 1782 is from "A Hawkins Genealogy 1638-1939, Record of the Descendants of Robert Hawkins of Charlestown, MA" by Ralph Clymer Hawkins published 1939 page 248, found at Heritage Quest Online.IGI shows she was born in Oxford, a parish of Derby, New Haven Co., CT, on the same date.
The proof that this Melinda, daughter of Gaylord Hawkins and Hannah Brown as shown in "A Hawkins Genealogy 1638-1939, Record of the Descendants of Robert Hawkins of Charlestown, MA" by Ralph Clymer Hawkins published 1939 page 248, is the same Melinda Hawkins mentioned in the death certificate of her daughter Ruth Bresee Strain, is based on the story that the youngest of Melinda's sons, Phineas Philips Bresee, was given to an aunt, Mrs. Phineas Philips, to be raised as a young child. This story is documented in "Phineas F. Bresee: a Prince in Israel" by Rev. E. A. Girvin, page 26. In the Hawkins genealogy it shows that Melinda's older sister Ruth married a Mr. Philips and that this Ruth must be the aunt that raised the child, Phineas Philips Bresee. Therefore, we have the right Melinda Hawkins as wife of Jeremiah Bresee.
Marriage
Their daughter Ruth's death certificate, lists Jeremiah Bresee as her father and Melinda Hawkins as her mother.Marriage year is my guess based on birth of first child.
1800 census for Chatham, Columbia Co., NY shows a Gaylord Hawkins age 27-45 (he was 48), with a male age 0-10 (?), a male age 11-16 (Herman 13), a male age 17-26 (Bela 17), a female age 0-10 (Curracne 3), 2 females ages 11-16 (Lydia 10, Lettis 14), 2 females ages 17-26 (Melinda 18 & Ruth 19) and two females age 27-45 (his wife, Hannah, was 47). This would support the fact that a marriage between Melinda Hawkins and Jeremiah Bresee would of been after the 1800 census.
