1887 deposition for his Civil War benefits (see my file JohnJBresee.jpg) dated 11 May 1887, that mentions many facts which are supported below. In addition he mentions a younger brother, Phineas, living in Iowa in 1868. See 1870 census for E. Des Moines Ward 6, Polk Co., Iowa, which shows a PP Bresee age 56 (Phineas Phillips) with son Phineas F. Bresee near by. John J. also mentions a sister who married a man by the name of David Strain in So. Worcester, NY. See 1850 census for Worcester, Otsego Co., NY showing David Strain and Ruth age 35 (born 1815 in NY). Ancestry.com shows Ruth's birth on 7 May 1815 and death 27 June 1891. In the deposition he states having another brother in Galesburg, IL two years younger named Nelson Bresee. Galesburg is in Knox Co., IL. See 1850 census for Hendersonville, Knox Co., IL showing Nelson Breese age 32 (born 1818 in NY) who is a carpenter. Other sources puts Nelson birth closer to 1811.

1877 marriage to Sarah Day is per Perry Bryant e-mail dated 23 Mar 05.

1870 census for Osage, Crawford Co., MO shows him and wife Elizabeth with children from her first marriage to William A. Bryan who died and a Samuel Bresee age 7/12.

1868 marriage to Elizabeth Fox is per Perry Bryant e-mail dated 23 Mar 05.

1865 his mother Melinda (Hawkins) Bresee dies 2 Aug 1865 and is buried close by in Musgrove Cemetery, 8 miles SE of Memphis, MO. In the same cemetery is Caleb Crandall, died 11 Aug 1852, age 72 years 10 months 28 days and Elizabeth (Bresee) Crandall who died 23 June 1857 (1847?) age 67 years 3 months 16 days per e-mail from Rik Vigeland (rik_vigeland@mentorg.com) dated Jan 1999. Elizabeth's death year may be 1847 based on her age at death and birth of 7 Mar 1780.

1857-1861 John J. was in Scotland Co., MO 10 miles SE of Memphis, MO until the war broke out per the his deposition dated 11 May 1887. The 1860 census for Harrison, Scotland Co., MO shows him age 53 (born 1807 in NY) and living with him was Mary Brasee age 37 (born 1823 in OH), John M. Brasee age 19 (born 1841 in OH), A.D. Brasee age 16 (born 1844 in OH). 1860 census for Sand Hill, Scotland Co., MO, which is close by, is his mother Melinda Brasee age 78 (born 1782 in CT) living with Caleb Crandall age 54 and Almyra Crandall age 52. His deposition states he had a sister near by named Almira Crandal who had a son named Jeremiah Crandel. The same census shows Jeremiah Crandall living next door. 1850 census for Mount Pleasant, Scotland Co., MO finds Almira and Caleb Crandle and their family. This is Caleb G. Crandall, the son of Caleb Crandall and Elizabeth Bresee. Elizabeth is the daughter of John C. Bresee and Elizabeth Rossman. Almira must of named her son, Jeremiah, after her father.

1835-1857 John J. was in Stephenson Co., IL per his deposition dated 11 May 1887. 1850 census for Rock Run, Stephenson Co., IL finds a John J. Breese, age 41 (born 1809 in NY) living with Elizabeth Breese age 7 (born 1843 in IL), William Breese age 4 (born 1846 in IL) and Melinda Breese age 70 (born 1780 in CT). This has to be his mother. The parents of the children is unknown.

1833 land records dated 13 Feb 1833 shows John J. Bresee selling part of lot #20 of the Charlotte River patent on the north side of the Charlotte River (which had to be part of his inherence from his father, Jeremiah Bresee) to a John Sherman, of Davenport. John J. does not show a wife on this document and must be single but it does show him as living in Davenport. Malinda Bresee, his mother, had a one sixth interest in the property and upon her demise would revert back to Hawkings Bresee (LDS film #557790 Deed Book L page 596).

1830 land records shows Hawkins Bresee and wife Lucy as grantors and John J. Bresee as grantee for part of lot #20 in the Charlotte River patent, formerly property of Jeremiah Bresee and Malinda Bresee, widow, in Deed Book J pages 608-609 film 557789. Can not find John J, in the 1830 census.

1827 he left Davenport, per his deposition dated 11 May 1887. This is after his father's death in 1826.

1820 census for Davenport, Delaware Co., NY, shows a John Bressee age 16-26 (he was 24) living with a female age 16-25.

1817 the town of Davenport, Delaware Co., NY, was created on 31 March 1817 from parts of the older towns of Kortright and Maryland, Otsego Co., NY.

1810 birth year and location from his deposition dated 11 May 1887 for Civil War benefits. 1860 census shows him 53, born 1807. 1850 census shows him age 41, born 1809. 1809-1810 appears appropriate.
