Nelson Bresee

1887 deposition for his Civil War benefits (see file JohnJBresee.jpg) dated 11 May 1887 mentions many facts which are supported below. In addition he mentions a younger brother, Phineas, living in Iowa in 1868 See 1870 census for E. Des Moines Ward 6, Polk Co., Iowa, which shows a PP Bresee age 56 (Phineas Phillips) with son Phineas F. Bresee near by. John J. also mentions a sister who married a man by the name of David Strain in So. Worcester, NY. See 1850 census for Worcester, Otsego Co., NY showing David Strain and Ruth age 35 (born 1815 in NY). Ancestry.com shows Ruth's birth on 7 May 1815 and death 27 June 1891. In the deposition he states having another brother in Galesburg, IL two years younger named Nelson Bresee. Galesburg is in Knox Co., IL. See 1850 census for Hendersonville, Knox Co., IL showing Nelson Breese age 32 (born 1818 in NY) who is a carpenter. Other sources puts Nelson birth closer to 1811.

LDS fish#6019475 on Davenport Cemetery "Brasee, Elmina Olivia (dtr of Nelson & Lydia) died 14 June 1814, age 1-11-14". This makes her father, Nelson Brasee, far too different in age then I have him. See Davenport Cemetery folder.

1880 census for Rohnerville, Humbolt Co., CA, shows Nelson Bresee, a carpenter age 69 (born 1811 in NY) living with son, Ira D. Bresee, age 38 born in NY. IGI has death date of 18 Oct 1890 in Fortuna, Humboldt Co., CA. 1880 death year also per Pat Gilbert. Get death certificate.

1869 married second wife a Mary E. Briggs on 25 Mar. 1869 in Knox Co., IL per e-mail in the Paul LeValley file.

1868 first wife Lydia, dies on 1 Oct 1868 and buried in Henderson IL cemetery per e-mail in the Paul LeValley file.

1860 census for Henderson, Knox Co., IL shows a Nelson Breese age 49 (born abt 1811) a mechanic born in New York living with a Lydia age 39 (born abt 1821 in New York) with a Franance age 13 and born in IL.

1850 census for Hendersonvile, IL, shows Nelson Breese, age 32 (born 1818 in NY and a carpenter) and wife Lidia age 27.

1836 married Lydia on 13 June 1836 per e-mail in the Paul LeValley file. On 26 July 1836, Nelson and wife Lydia Bresee sold 2 acres of land being part of lot 17 in the Charlotte River patent on the south side of the river. This land is next to Sarah Ten Eycks and Isaac Pierce property and may have been owned by George Ten Eyck. Nathan Olmstead witnessed Lydia Bresee's signed "X" on this document. Nelson's brother Hawkins married a Louise "Lucy" Pearce and his sister Nancy may have married a Henry (Ten Eyck)TenEich. Nelson's father, Jeremiah Bresee owned property in lots 19 and 20 of the Charlotte River patent.

1811 Pat Gilbert's posting shows birth on 18 June 1811. Confirmed by 1860 census. IGI has birth of 23 Jan 1811 in NY.
