Notes
Death
Stomach absessDeath
BRENNIMAN - Died Wednesday, August 13, 1890, of abscess of the stomach, Alice Brenniman, age 16 yesrs.Alice was the daughter of Gotlieb and Barbara Brenniman and was born in Poweshiek County, July - 1874. She was a young lady dearly beloved by all, standing as a leading spirit in the neighborhood. Although not a member, she affiliated with the people of the Moravian denomination at Harmony and had adopted the faith of the church. She was always prominent in the church society and made friends by her pleasing character. She will be missed. The funeral services were held from the Moravian church yesterday forehoon, the Rev. Mr. Oehler officiating.
The messenger of death has again visited our community and claimed for its victim one of the brightest young girls. The death of Alice Brenniman has cast a gloom over the entire community. Her death was peculiarly sad. She was a young girl just budding into a glorious womanhood. She was a bright, intelligent, lovable and general favorite with everybody. She had a pleasant home, friends without number and everything to make life desirable. Hers was a brave spirit during the long and terrible struggle.
She battled for her life with a heroism never excelled and seldom equaled and only gave up the struggle when the last drop of her blood was gone and the last spark of vitality was exhausted. During the long months of suffering, through days of such intense heat that a well person could hardly exist and through nights that seemed to have no end, no murmur ever escaped her lips. She underwent two painful surgical operations and no cry ever escaped her. During all those months of suffering she was cheerful and hopeful, speaking of the things she would do when she got well.
In regard to her sickness, about the 1st of January she took a bad cold and for several weeks she was indisposed. About the 1st of May Drs. Shrader of Iowa City and Carder of Brooklyn, were called and after a critical examination they discoverd the trouble to be an abscess in the side. Two surgical operations were performed successfully and hopes were entertained fro her recovery but they were in vain. She kept failing. Some two weeks ago she was moved by the advice of her physicians to the residence of H. H. Connell, thinking the change might do her good. But, she kept getting worse and on Saturday night she became delirious, remaining in that condition with the exception of short intervals when she seemed to be rational, until Wednesday when she passed away.
The funeral was held on Thursday at the church and was one of the largest ever held in this part of the country, numbers coming from a distance testifying to the esteem in which she was held by all who knew her. Rev. Ochler preached a very able serman which went home to everyone that heard it and will not soon be forgotten. The Grace church choir of Brooklyn was present and rendered several beautiful selections. The body was laid at rest in the cemetery near the church. The tenderest sympathies of the entire community are extended to the bereaved family and especially to the mother who watched over her child during the long months of her illness with a devotion such as only a mother can give.

For some unknown reason, as is her sister Mabel, the first letter of her name is not inscribed onto her stone. Her stone reads Lige, dau of G. & B. Breniman. I don't know if the "A" is missing or if her nickname was Lige.Endnotes
