Individual Details
Julia Annah "Annah" PIERCE
(21 May 1845 - 29 Feb 1916)
At the age of 9, she moved with her parents to Geneseo, Il.,where she continued her education in High School and Seminary. In 1864 she joined her parents at Brooklyn,Ia., where she taught school. She met and married Christian D. Breniman.
In early life she united with the Congregational Church in Connecticut where she was a member until 1909 when she united with the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church of Brooklyn, of which she was a member until she died.
Julia, in later years, was confined to a wheelchair because she had such bad varicose veins in her legs. I have photos of her in her wheelchair. Her obituary states that she was an invalid for 40 years.
Pat Breniman Rowell (this ed.) has a large wall portrait of Julia. I also have in my possession Julia's wedding dress, a dress made of brown material, very full skirt, fitted bodice with cloth buttons. The dress was in the possession of Dorothy Windust (great granddaughter) , and she gave it to me in 1989 when I visited her in California. Someone had started to take the gown apart, but I spent time and carefully put it all back together. The dress was both machine and hand made and fully lined. It had a ribbon attached to it and on one side it said,"my mother's best dress bought in 1867" and on the other it said,"Wedding dress". I believe that this may have been written by Virginia Breniman (her daughter) , but I have no proof. After over 130 years, this dress is in near mint condition, has several tiny moth holes and several spots of oil stain on the skirt. I (Pat Rowell) am very proud to have her gown.
I might also add that I tried on the dress after I had put it back together and found that Julia would have been 3-4 inches taller than I am, making her about five foot eight or nine inches tall if the dress came to the ground.
