John Calvin Greear

"John Calvin Greear lived at Grant, Virginia several years after he married, during which time he was in the mercantile business. From Grant he moved to Mercer County, West Virginia, near Falls Mills, Virginia, where in 1870, he purchased 282 acres on Brush Creek for $ 1000.00. From there he moved to Tazewell County, Virginia and bought 3 acres of land on the Blue River for $ 400.00 on December 27, 1884. In 1885 he purchased three tracts of 50 acres, 6 acres, and 7 acres between the Fincastle - Cumberland Gap Turnpike and Lynn Hollow and 60 acres on the north side of East River Mountain. On April 2, 1897, John Calvin bought 20 acres of land for $ 250.00 on the south side of Sink Ridge and the north side of Turnpike to Graham. Then on March 14, 1898, he purchased 10 acres for $ 35.00 on the headwaters of the Clinch River. He lived on the farm in Tazewell County on Highway 19 until he died. His son Troy was living on the farm in September 1944." (Lois Temple FGS 288.)

"John Calvin Greear was engaged in the mercantile business at the old family stand at Grant, Virginia and hired a substitute to fight in his place for the first two years of the war, and then he was in the service for the remaining two years. He was in several battles, among them: the Battle of New Creek, Fisher's Hill, about October 19, 1864, Valley of Virginia, about Christmas time, 1864 and at Winchester about September 19, 1864. He belonged to the 8th Virginia Calvery, Co. C. His captain was R. G. Bowen." (Flo Faulkner, 1939.)

"John Calvin and Sarah Jane Greear are buried at the old homeplace on Highway 19. This little cemetery is on the Greear homeplace.
