William Brown Greear

(April 5, 1871 - March 22, 1948)

"William Brown Greear was in the mercantile business, starting at age 13 in his father's store at Witten's Mill. He opened a store at Maxwell, Virginia, then operated the Red Flag Store at Honaker, Virginia. In 1908, he started a mercantile business with his brother and brother-in-law, E. S. Hurt at St. Paul, Virginia known as "Greear Brothers and Hurt" with stores at Witten's Mill, Honaker, and St. Paul, Virginia. He also had a store at Wilmore. With his brothers, E. M. and T. M., the Honaker Planing Mill was founded. He managed a coal plant at Raven prior to settling at Cliffield. He lived for some time in Wilmore, Kentucky, where his sons received their education at Asbury College. He retired in 1945, after being in the mercantile business for 50 years. He devoted a great deal of time to lay service in the Methodist Church and was a temperance leader. He assisted in various civic projects at Cliffield. The present site of Cliffield is built on land divided from his farm." (Lois Temple FGS 393)
