Eugene Marshall Greear

"E. M. Greear was a partner with his brothers in the Honaker Planing Mill. He was later a jeweler at Honaker, Virginia for several years and moved from there to Harlan, Kentucky for several years. He then removed to Honaker, where he was mayor from 1925 - 1927. He had cataract surgery at the State University Hospital at Charlottesville, Virginia about December 1948." (Lois Temple FGS 401)
"Honaker Jeweler Passes At Home Monday (1951) - Mr. Eugene Marshall Greear was born January 9th 1874 and died August 6th 1951, age 77 years, 6 months, and 27 days. He was the son of the late John Calvin Greear and Sarah Jane Graybeal Greear. He was married to Miss Susie McNew, daughter of the late Thomas and Mary McNew of Honaker, on March 9th 1904. To this union two sons were born: Thomas Calvin Greear of Roanoke and Eugene Marshall Greear, Jr., of Honaker. Besides his wife and sons, he leaves 2 grand daughters, Carol Sue Greear and Sally Jean Greear, of Honaker; two brothers and one sister survive: Troy M. Greear, of North Tazewell, Virginia; Dr. C. B. Greear, Honaker; Mrs. E. H. Hurt, Kingsport, Tennessee. He was a long time member of the Methodist Church, a member of the Board of Stewards for a number of years and Superintendent of the Honaker Methodist Sunday School for years until his health began to fail. He was a jeweler by trade and had a smile and cherry hello to all who entered or passed his store. He was especially fond of children and all who knew him, loved him. Funeral services were held from the First Methodist Church on Wednesday at 2 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. M. Randall, assisted by Rev. Clyde Dowdy, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Clark Cemetery." (obituary)
