John was probably born in late 1788, although he was baptised in Teigngrace Church on 10 January 1789.
After being educated at Blundells between February 1798 (aged 10) and June 1805 (aged 17), John took Holy Orders, but it is not known where he was employed, although he was living in the Newton Abbot area at the time of his marriage, and was probably a deacon in one of the Churches, he later moved to Ashburton and appears to have lived their until he took on the living at Teigngrace.
On 26 June 1818, aged 30, he married Elizabeth Sunter at Ashburton. She was the daughter of Joseph Sunter of Ashburton. All his children were born in Ashburton.
In 1832, on the death of his uncle, the Reverend John Templer of Lindridge, he succeeded him as Rector of Teigngrace, a post he held for 37 years. His appointment to the living would have been made by the Duke of Somerset, as his elder brother George had been forced to sell the Stover Estates in 1829.
