Commander William Templer RN

(Bef 8 Jan 1784 - 28 Jan 1805)

Goelan, 16 Sloop In Commission Commander Templer William

William aspired to a naval career, but like others of his family it was cut short by an early death at sea at the age of 21. According to Athur Mee's Devonshire, under the paragraph for Teigngrace, William met his death (off Jamaica) in the West Indies.

Ron Lewin - 1983

Is recorded in CRT's cards as being a Captain in the Royal Navy. However, this seems unlikely as he was drowned with a boats crew in a storm off Jamaica on 28 January 1805 when he was only 22. Unlike the Army at the time, it was not possible to buy a commission or rank in the Royal Navy which has always used merit and experience as the basis of promotion. To have achieved the rank of Captain at the age of 22 is almost unheard of.

What is more likely is that he was a Lieutenant in command of a small ship, and the commanders of all ships were known as 'the Captain'.
