Individual Details
Charles Templer
(6 Dec 1786 - Nov 1806)
Another son of James Templer, Charles was baptised on 14 January 1788 at Teigngrace. Educated at Blundells School, Tiverton from 2 February 1798 until 16 December 1802, he decided on an Army career and in 1805 at the early age of 17 he became a Bengal Infantry Cadet.
Ironically, while on passage to India in December of the following year (1806), he was drowned in the wreck of the Skelton Castle. The Skelton Castle sailed from England in the summer of 1806 and was seen for the last time in December 1806. Surprisingly though Charles was struck off the Bengal Army lists with effect from 5 November 1806.
Ron Lewin - 1983
Although born in 1786, he was not baptised until he was nearly 2 years old. He and his younger sister Amelia were baptised on the same day, 14 January 1788, in Teigngrace Church.
He was educated at Blundells public school between February 1798 (aged 12) and December 1802 (aged 16).
In 1805 he joined the Honorable East India Company (HEICS) and became a Cadet at Addiscombe with the intention of joining the Bengal Infantry. However, he never reached India, because his ship, the Skelton Castle, was lost on 1 November 1806.
