1856 Iowa State Census, age 45 (1811), b. Penn., Carpenter. Is marked as Native voter and as Militia. It also said he had 10 acres of improved land, 200 acres of unimproved. He had been in Iowa zero years. Crops were:

01 Oct 1873, Joshua appears on the delinquent tax list published for 1872 and previous years. He owed $28.18 including penalty. Property was Pt. SW SW S26 T78 R16W; Pt NE SE NW S33 T78 R16W; West half NE 1/4S28 T78 R16W.
23 Sep 1874, he was again on the delinquent tax list for $20.81 for the west half NE qtr S28, T78 R16W.
04 Oct 1876, he was again on the delinquent tax list in the amount of$40.70 for: Lots 3 & 8 SW SW S26 T78 R16W (9 acres); West half NE 1/4S28 T78 R16W (80 acres).
On 05 Mar 1877, the Poweshiek County Board of Supervisors approved a claim to J.J. Vincent for a witness fee in State vs. R. Stein, et al for 1.40., published in the Montezuma Republican. In the paper of 11 Apr 1877, the Board approved a witness fee for Thos Vincent for State vs. Bramer for $.60.
On 06 Sep 1877 the Board of Supervisors approved a School Fund Loan which had been made since the March meeting to J.J. Vincent in the amount of $500. On 05 Mar 1879 the Montezuma Republican published" Original Notice" in Circuit Court of Poweshiek Co., April Term, 1879, Poweshiek Co. for use of School Fund vs. C.C. Robinson Administrator of the Estate of J.J. Vincent, deceased, et al.
Letters of Administration for the probate of J.J. Vincent were issued 16 Nov 1878 at Montezuma, Poweshiek Co., IA. There is an affidavit by Sarah Vincent, signed by her mark, that lists his surviving heirs,their ages and place of residence as of 16 Nov. 1878. It gave Joshua's death date as 14 Sep 1878. It stated that at the time of his death he owned the following real estate:
80 acres W 1/2 NE qr of Sec 28 Twp 78 R 16
1-3/6 acres Lot 8 SW 1/4 SW qr of Sec 26 Twp 78 R 16
30 acres Lots 6 & 7 NW 1/4 SW qr of Sec 26 Twp 78 R 16
She also stated he owned personal property not exceeding $350. Have copies of all papers in probate file. Personal property sold at auction totalled $95.50. Set off to widow as exempt from execution totalled $349.05 and included a sewing machine. No bible listed. Coffin purchased in New Sharon.
A Sheriff's Deed in the probate file sold on 23 Aug 1879 to A. W.Ballard for $262.65 and he assigned the sale to Allen and T. H.Vincent, the following: (Note legal differs from widow's affidavit).
SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Sec 26 Twp 78 N Range 16 W except five (5) acres.Also Lots 6 & 7 in the West 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Sec 26 Twp 78 R 16 W ofthe 5th P.M.
A Sheriff's Deed in the probate file sold on 26 Jul 1880 for $235.22 to A. W. Ballard who then assigned to Sarah Vincent the following:
Lots 3 & 8 in the SW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 Sec 26 Twp 78 N R 16 W of the5th P.M.

The WPA record should come from the gravestone, so is more likely correct. The birth date obtained giving Joshua's birthdate as 16 May 1814 is from a written memo by Evelyne Vincent 6 Sep 1982 in the possession of Becky Smith. There is no notation as to where she obtained that date, but it has a number of other Vincent names and dates.
