Individual Details
Thomas H. VINCENT
(2 Jun 1859 - Mar 1955)
Affidavit of 16 Nov 1878 by his mother, Sarah Vincent, in his father's probate states: Thomas H. Vincent aged 18 years (1860) and single and whose P.O. address Searsboro Iowa.
Bio in Montana history says he went to the Madison Valley, MT, in April 1882, at the age of 23. He came to Dillon from Ogden over the newly completed Union Pacific Railroad. The trip by train from Mahaska County to Ogden to Dillon took 3 weeks. From Dillon, he came to the Madison Valley by stagecoach, walking most of the way, as the coach was crowded and muddy roads made it difficult for horses to pull the coach. He recalled that while he was on the train to Ogden an announcement was made of the robbery of another train by Jesse James. Gives marriage date and says they were married in McAllister and at the same time a sister, Minnie Caroline Richter, married John M.Wylie, a teacher and rancher from near Bozeman. On Nov. 19,, the day before the wedding, the two prospective bridegrooms took a cold and stormy horseback trip to Virginia City to get marriage licenses from Clerk of the Court, Ed Gohn.
He and Lora took over management of the Richter ranch and for 30 years owned and operated it. At that time, the ranch included some hay land now covered by Ennis Lake. They lived next to the mountains on the South Fork of Meadow Creek. When the ranch was sold, they moved into a small place they had built on lower Meadow Creek near the lake. Tom continued with an active interest in land and cattle until 1952. The article contains a photo of Tom and Lora, ages 87 and 84, and one of Tom age 93. He died in March 1955 at the age of 95 in White Sulphur Springs where he had been staying several years at the home of a nephew. He is buried in the family plot in the McAllister Cemetery.
