Thomas Francis Condon

(1853 - 16 Dec 1924)

Farmed near Clara City,MN in 1880s. Have trouble with his birthday: 1900 census says Aug 1857 and that he was 42 years old. 1910 census lists him as 56 in June 1910 which would be 1853. Family tradition has him as 73 at his death in Dec 1924 which is 1851. Came to Am in 1872 according to 1900 and 1910 census at about age 15.

Roy Condon said: there is a Condon Castle in Ireland. Thomas swam the English Channel in the 1870's. Owned 1260 acres of land near Clara City. Had 26 horses to work land. 100 head of cattle to milk. Paid room and board and $1.00 to go to dances. Roy claimed he did all the cooking and housework as the girls got married early. They had corn, oats, and barley crops.Sold the farm in 1917 when Roy was 17. Sold 1260 acres for $50 per acre. Thomas gave all the kids $5 gold piece when married but Bill got a penny

Cecelia Condon: Tom and Mike moved to the Clara City area, half-way between Clara City and Kerkhoven. Tom had to build a house as it was all raw land, Not even a stick of wood on it. He built a sod house, and that was where they lived for about 10 years before they could build a wood home. This was on homestead land. Brother Mike started buying cattle for Swift and Company. His sons followed in his footsteps. The Weis family was related to both Hubbards and Condons.

Francis Condon: Tom liked to play a game or two of cards every day. Sold the farm and moved to St Cloud, MN, when 5 sons went into service during WWI and they also found out Nora had cancer. Nora was in Rochester. In 1920 Charlie came home on leave to visit his mother at Rochester. She died on April 18, 1921 and Francis and Charlie got married in June.
tt
Neighbor and close friend of Condons, John Thein, in interview with Betty Condon in 8 Jul 1991 at Bethesda Home, Pleasant View, Willmar, MN: A Mr. Grashuis bought the entire farm of Tom Condon when they had the auction - only part saved was the 160 acres for Agnes Condon Lantz and 160 acres for Vincent Condon. The day of the sale in March was a very wet spring and the people came to the auction by horse and wagon. They bogged down in the mud and had to be pulled by teams of horses. Tom had over 100 horses for the sale. Pete Thein bought one of the horses for $160...a good price in those days. A matched team sold for $500 and the land sold for $57 an acre. (Sold farm 1917)
Tom's mother was one of the first funerals held at Clara City, MN. People tied their horses to the barn on the Thein farm. Tom raised and traded Belgians and Perchan horses and would take them around to different farms for breeding purposes.
Tom got drunk in Clara City and chased his horses up and down the streets with a whip. Nora would get Fr Schumaker the parish priest and he would go after Tom...take away the whip...and tell Tom to go home. Tom would mind him and go home.
As a fairly newly married couple, Tom and Nora experienced the storm of the century. Snow drifts up to 30 feet deep. Tom and Nora were caught in their house completely covered with snow. They had no way out. A search party was started after 4 to 5 days when the snow quit as no one had seen them. A Mr Steiger who had married a Fritz girl, found Tom and Nora. Mr Steiger was walking around in the area where they thought the house was...area was completely cover with snow and drifts...and he fell thr their chimney and into the kitchen. Tom and Nora were sure happy to see him as they were about out of food and had no way to get out themselves.

George Condon (John Condon's son): John told George that Mike and Tom worked their way to Colorado on the railroad. Tom was a teamster and had the finest Belgium horses. They got stuck in Denver, CO and heard about homestead land in Minnesota so they came to Minnesota and homesteaded 80 acres each. Mike did not believe in slave labor farming but Tom believed in the earth. Tom was 19 or 20 years old at this time.
Mike met a red-headed gal, a Fritz Gal and married her. Tom was still a bachelor and set up housekeeping on the farm so Mike didn't like farming and went to Clara City, MN as a butcher. Tom stayed on the farm, met Nora Hubbert and got married and remained farming. (Tom was 22 or 23 years old)
Mike could really drink and became a Cattle Buyer for Swift and Company and bought best when full of whiskey.
