Patrick Condon

(1820 - 1900)

Name: His name referred as Thomas on son Thomas' Death certificate. Info given by Thomas' son John Condon; as Frank by Roy Condon; and as Patrick in Census:1880 and 1900

1880 US Census, Woods Twp, Chippewa Co, MN
Patrick Condon, head, age 57, farmer, Ire Ire Ire
Ellen, wife, 35, keeping house, Ire Ire Ire
Thomas, son, 26, farmer, Ire Ire Ire
===================================

Maybe came to America w/family to Boston and he stayed in Boston or the east. Betty Condon used the name Frank (actually she wasn't sure) but his name was probably Patrick. The 1900 census lists a Patrick and Elen living with Mike Condon family and are listed as Mike's father and mother. Patrick was 80 and Elen 60 in 1900. Pat came to Am in 1872 at 52 yrs of age and Elen came from Ireland in 1868. They had been married for 23 years in 1900 so were married in America. Elen did not have any children so she is not the natural mother of Tom and Mike. Of Frank's children one daughter was thought to be a nun in NY. Family tradition says that Frank came to America with 6 sons and 1 daughter. They lived in NY before they split up.

I found the ships listing for the Condon children but Patrick was not among them. He may have come earlier than the children but at least I think he came at a different time. His first wife died before he came to America. She is named Bridget on the baptism records of their children and there is a reference to Bridget Condon in the Ireland, Civil Registration Deaths Index, 1864-1958 on Ancestry. This reference says she was born about 1819 and died in 1871 at age 52 in Youghal.

I think Patrick lived in County Cork, Barony of Imokilly, Parish of Youghal and townland of Dysart according to Griffith's Valuation. Dysart was down by the sea on SW end of Youghal along coast on the map with Griffith's Valuation. This information is very close to all the family lore passed down.

It has been difficult to find any family history in Ireland but recently access to the Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915 from the National Library of Ireland; Dublin, Ireland on Ancestry has helped to find more info on this family.

Interview notes by Bob Gavin with Roy Condon Fall of 1978, in Durand, WI, Bob Galvin sent his notes to Betty Condon on 2-3-1980:

1. There is a Condon Castle in Cork, Ireland.
2. Grandfather Tom Condon and brother, Mike Condon, farmed in Clara City area in 1880's. Also he mentioned a Uncle Patrick, on a farm near Clara City.; and Grandpa brother and sister went to California; and Roy's Grandfather stayed in Boston. They separated.
3. Nora Hubbard was Tom's wife (Grandfather)
4. Tom and Nora went to New York in early 1900's to see brother and sister - the relative never came to visit Minn.
5. Tom Condon, your Grandpa, swam the English Channel in the 1870's.
6. Nora Hubbard was a tiny woman but headstrong.
7. Harold Knutson, Congressman from St Cloud, was a good friend of Condon's and helped with VA problems.
8. Thomas Condon could not read or write until an advanced age but owned 1260 A of farm land.
9. Thomas had 26 horses to work the farm and boys had to get up at 5 or 6 am ( no matter how late they were out) to do chores - plain hard work - now called drudgery.
10. They had over 100 head of cattle to be milked. the only pay was room and board plus $1.00 to go to dance
Crops were corn, oats and barley
11. Roy claimed he did the cooking and house work as all the girls got married early.
12. Thomas was a small man but tough and handled the boys with ease.
13. The house was an add on type. Barn, learn to's and sheds; granary, sheep sheds.
They had duck eggs for breakfast.
14. Money came from selling crops. Chickens were killed, cleaned and put in barrels and shipped to Chicago.
15. Tom sold the farm when Roy was 17. Sold 1260 A at $50/A in 1917.
16. Only Jim and John could get the ?
17. Grandpa Condon gave all children when married a 5 dollar gold piece. Son William got one penny.
18. Most of the children went to school for 4-5 years- from 1 Nov to 1 Apr each year.
19. Roy said only Vincent and Agnes went to college and the rest didn't like that very much.
20. The family lived in a 6 bedroom house for 14 children and father and mother.
21. Roy said they had at least 15 for every meal- food was common but good and plentiful.
22. Roy said at the time of the depression of 1932 his brother Jim had a dream about banks failing - so next day he took his money out of the bank, but his brother William failed to take Jim's advice and lost his money.

Bob says Great Grandfather Condon's name was Frank (not Patrick). He listed Frank's children as: Thomas, Michael, Joseph, Patrick, John, A sister in a convent in New York.
====================================
Family separated in Boston some time after arrival in Am.
Tom, Mike and Patrick came to MN; A brother and sister went to California; Frank stayed in Boston. A sister is supposed to have gone into convent. Tom and Nora went to New York in 1900 to see brother and sister. Some info that Tom and Mike worked in button factory in Mass before starting west. Some info that Tom and Mike worked on railroad as teamster until made way to Denver, CO, before going to MN. Hubberts lived near Lexington, MA for several years before going to MN. Colemans settle in Scott county, MN first before going to Chippewa Co when Condons, Hubberts there. Somehow the Weise and Buckley families fit in with the Hubberts and Colemans and Condons.
======================================

Thomas, M, 18, Lab
Pat, M, 16,Lab
Bdgt, F, 13, Lab

Notes by Susan W. Stevens, Gr Gr Granddaugter of Patrick Condon
The Condons were one of 331 baronies in Ireland recorded in 1672 in Hiberniae Delineatio, "Perry's Atlas", engraved in 1671-2 by William Perry from the data of the Down Survey. It was mentioned that they had been Barons for probably several centuries by then of the county Cork. They owned 78,481 cres in 1672 in Cork County, Ireland. They also had a family crest and many castles over the centuries. Back in 1050 or so they were of Norwegian descent and spelled their last name Condunaigh and then anglicized to Cauntons around 1200 and then shortened more to Condon around 1400. Bt 1672 this had become a shared Barony by Ellen Condon and her husband FitzGibbons. There is Condon castle left standing in Cork County that Dorothy Tammen Cummings, Patrick's great granddaughter visited with her family and took pictures of. Patrick Condon and his 7 children may have come to America on the ship "Greece" out of Liverpool, England arriving in New York on October 14, 1872. All 7 of his children are listed on the ships manifest but I cannot find Patrick seniors name on the rolls. They met the Hubberts board the ship and became friends. According to the 1900 census 1872 is the year Patrick, Thomas and Michael (Mehieale) claim they arrived. Patrick senior either got left off the hand written roster or he came over on another boat. I cannot find the name of Patrick's wife and mother of those seven children either. She could have passed away before they departed or refused to leave Ireland. Patrick, Tom and Mike worked in a button factory in Boston for four years. In 1876 they used the money they had saved to travel to the Township of Louristan (Louriston) in Minnesota and settled on a farm there only 1 1/2 miles from the Hubberts. Patrick married a Ellen in 1877 in Minnesota according to the 1900 census, it notes they had been married for 23 years. They are listed as farmers. Ellen (Elen) was also listed as Patrick's wife in the 1880 census. She was listed as 35 (thus born in 1845) and was born in Ireland to Irish parents. Patrick shows he was 57 in 1880 (thus born in 1823). I the 1880 census only Thomas (26) was listed as living with Patrick and Ellen. They were listed as farmers and they could all speak, read and write English. The 1885 census shows just Patrick and Ellen living together in Chippewa County. Patrick is listed as 65 (thus born in 1820) and Ellen is listed as 50 (thus born in 1835). The 1900 census shows Patrick as 80 years old born in 1820 and Elen as 60 years old born in May 1840 and that they were living with his son Michael's family. Michael became a cattle buyer and owned a butcher shop in Clara City. Both Patrick and Ellen died in 1900 soon after the census was taken in June. It does not appear that Patrick and Ellen had any children together. Of Patrick's seven children only 2 came with him to Chippewa, Minnesota. Thomas was 18 and Michael was 8.
