Thomas POOR

(12 Jul 1768 - Bef 18 Oct 1830)

St. James Northam Parish:
Thomas Poor & Elizabeth Mosely a son named Thomas born Jul: 12 1768. Baptized Sep: 4 1768. p.82 of Parish record.

This Thomas Poore is said to have been much younger than Elizabeth and to have married Susannah Haden, Elizabeth & Zachariah's daughter (his niece - born the same year, 1768). [It is true that he's much younger but I very much doubt that he married his niece - I think the Thomases have been confused. There were as many, if not more, taboos involved in this time period regarding such a marriage as there would be today.] Another Thomas Poor, born 1762, was most likely the Thomas who married Susannah Haden.

In his father's will, Thomas received slaves, and a lost horse - if the horse was not found he was to be given a colt instead - and a desk after his wife's decease. Thomas also was to receive the remainder of his land and plantation [one half had previously been specified to go to his brother William]. Thomas was listed as a surviving child and recipient of the final distribution of the estate in 1798.

I wonder if the witness of these deeds is this Thomas Poor. Thomas's mother's sister Sarah had married William Daniel - Ichabod was their son, John Lovell was their son-in-law who had married their daughter Mary.

I believe it possible that this Thomas married Jean/Jane Lee and the following is his will - he remained in Goochland:
