Mary POOR

(Abt 1740 - )

Mentioned in deposition given 21 Oct 1754 by Susannah Poor. Susannah stated that about twelve years prior to the date of the deposition she was at the home of John Mosely with her husband Thomas Poor, dec'd., their son Thomas and his wife Elizabeth and their grandaughter Mary Poor, an infant about two years of age. That at the time and occasion John Mosely gave his granddaughter Mary Poor, a slave named Rose.

Age approximated from deposition of Susannah Poor. Considering the baptism dates of later children of Thomas & Elizabeth, I suspect the aged Susannah's memory to have been faulty and Mary was not quite this old.

She could be the Mary Poore that married Zachariah Williams, 20 Nov 1755, if she was two years old in 1742. The children of Zachariah Williams and Mary Pore/Poor who appear in the St. James Northam record:
John, born 1 Oct 1756 and baptized 31 Oct 1756.
Elizabeth, born 13 Jan 1758 and baptized 19 Mar 1758.
Mary, born 1 Jan 1760 and baptized 17 Feb 1760.
Joanna, born 4 Dec 1761 and baptized 14 Dec 1761.
Fanny, born 25 Nov 1763 and baptized 2 Jan 1764.
Sally, born 24 Dec 1765 and baptized 2 Feb 1766.

However, the estate settlement of her father Thomas Poor, in 1798, gives her name as Mary Thomas, not Williams. I think it is also possible, maybe even likely that the Mary Poor who married Zachariah Williams was a younger sister to Thomas Poor, not his daughter.
