Mary Ann "Polly" Winkler

(Mar 1846 - 24 Oct 1922)

Married twice - to Samuel Rufus Johnston, and to S. E. Hendron. Married Samuel R. Johnson, 6 Oct 1864, Clark Co, IN. I suspect she did not remarry - if so, it was after the death of Samuel in 1910.

Samuel Rufus Johnston died 19 Nov 1910, Trinity Co, TX. Married Clark Co, IN, 20 Oct 1863 (IN records show 6 Oct 1864). She was age 60, born Estill Co, KY. Had lived in Texas for 46 years - the last 31 years in Groveton. He served in Mississippi for 4 years from Spring of 186 to the close of the war according to what he had told her. Company E., 6th MS Infantry.
Witnesses: J. S. Myers & C. H. Cox - personally acquainted and she had been a resident of Texas since prior to 1 Mar 1880.
W. W. Martin, County Assessor of Trinity Co, swore to the value of her property at $420.00. 13 Jun 1912.
Interrogatories of Ras Platt of Chester, Tyloer Co, TX, age 68. Served with S. R. Johnston in the civil War for 14 months. He met him sometime during 1860 at Grenada, MS - he was in the 6th MS Regt, Company E, as a private and was a volunteer. He was a good man and a good soldier. He knew no other soldier by the name of Johnston. 5 Jun 1912.
Interrogatories of J. T. Currie, age 78 of Kenwood, Houston Co, TX. He had known S. R. Johnston for 52 years. He knew he served in Co E, 6th MS Regit. Met him in april 1861 at Lake Stn., MS and served with him one year or more. Knew no other soldier by that name. He served honorably as long as he was in the service with him - more than one year. He disappeared from the command in March, from Marietta to Atlanta, GA. Did not see him again until after the war. Does not know if he was captured. 1 Jun 1912.
From the War Dept, 22 Jun 1912. Confederate records show that S. R. Johnston, private, Company E, 6th MS Infantry, CSA, enlisted Aug 24, 1861. Company roll, dated Aug 31, 1864, shows he reported absent without leave since July 5th. Union records show he was captured in Hinds Co, MS and released July 18, 1864, from Louisville military prison, to remain north of the Ohio River. [Note: This explains how he met and married Mary Ann in Indiana...]

Buried as Mollie Winkler Johnson, Groveton, Trinity, TX? Marker seems much newer - three Johnston names on the stone: Mollie Winkler; Samuel Rufus, Squire; and Caroline Lorance. No dates. The entry claims Samuel as the spouse of Caroline nee Lorance and that they married 1834 - not likely since he wasn't even born. Claims a sister to Samuel as Susan Anne Johnston Currie, b. 6 Jan 1843, d. 12 Oct 1896, Crockett, Houston Co, TX, wife of James Thomas Currie. I wonder if instead, Caroline was the MOTHER of Samuel & Susan? And, in fact, she was - see the 1850 census attached to him.
