Pension W-3061. Henry stated he was born in March of 1755 or 1756 in Easton, PA, and moved with his father to North Carolina when he was quite young. He first volunteered in 1775 and served about six months as a private in Capt. David Smith's Company, Col. Locke's NC Regt. in an expedition to Cross Creek against the cherokee. He next served in a company of horse, commanded by Peter Hetrick, Col. Lofton's NC Regt and was in an engagement with British Dragoons at Mass Ferry on the Pedee River. He was out in several short tours in pursuit of the Tories. He believed he served 14 months in al.. He was allowed pension. He gave testimony on two occasions. The first time, 20 Aug 1832, he said he was age 74 and stated he had lived on the present bounds in Estill County near 30 years. He gave additional testimony on 21 Jan 1833 and at that time stated he had removed from North Carolina to Estill Co about 23 years ago.
After the death of Henry, Susannah applied for her widow's pension - 27 Nov 1838. she stated she was married to Henry on the last day of June or first day of July in 1778 in the county of "Roan" and state of North Carolina. Henry had died 1 Jul 1836. She was allowed the pension. She last appeared in court on 9 Sep 1848, aged 89 years, to apply under the Act of Congress passed 2 Feb 1848.

On 22 Jul 1839, William Winkler deposed on behalf of Susannah, stating he was age 41 and the eighth child of Henry Winkler, deceased, and his surviving widow, Susannah. His father was a pensioner on the roll of the Kentucky agency. He died 1 July 1836 and Susannah had remained a widow. His father had kept a record of his children's ages in a book called "The Young Man's Companion" but he didn't know in whose handwriting the record was because his father was illiterate. After his father's death the book had been in possession of Mrs. Frances Cook which he had taken out of the book and made part of his deposition. The page from the book is now impossible to read, but a letter from A. D. Hiller, Executive Asst to the Administrator of the Pensions Dept, in answer to an inquiry lists the children's births as:
John born November 7, 1780
Elizabeth born September 13, 1782
Lewis born April 10, 1785
Susanna born Aug 20, 1787
Henry born Oct 24, 1789
Note: three more sons were born to the couple: David, Michael, and William.

I have seen no record proving that Susannah's surname was Ross.

1810 Census - Estill County
Winkler Henry 1 m (under 10), 1 m (10-16), 3 m (16-25), 1 m (over 45)

probably Henry and Susannah, William was youngest, then Michael, David & Harry & Lewis were young men still at home; daughters likely married

1830 Census. Estill, KY
Henry Winkler: 1m under 5, 1m age 70-80 (Henry). 2f 5-10, 1f 10-15, 1f age 50-60. The children would have to be grandchildren and it appears that Susannah was omitted.
