Perhaps stayed in North Carolina and did not go to Kentucky, along with his sister Elizabeth who never married. Said to have married Mary Pennell. No such marriage record found. Carl Winkler believes this to be the correct relationship.

There is a John Winkler in the 1820-1840 censuses in Burke, NC.

Any possibilities for sorting out this John are confused by very incorrect and impossible Ancestry trees. There is an Estill Co, Kentucky marriage for a John Winkler to Mary Elizabeth Davis, 3 Nov 1822. This would be very late and children are cited born a decade earlier. A wife "Nancy" is cited earlier with no proof. Neither of these seem to be correct.

Two marriages, both early 1838, have permissions signed by Frances Winkler - the desingation of her mark is "her mark". One of these is Jane Winkler to Allen Mansfield, permissions signed by his father, William Mansfield, and by Frances Winkler, 7 Feb 1838. Marriage performed 22 May 1838. Numerous trees have attempted to place Jane in the family of William Winkler & Nancy Noland, but no evidence supports such a daughter in their family. The permission for Katherine to marry John Clemmons is also signed by Frances Winkler - the Madison Co marriage book has the name wrong and listed the mother as also "Katherine".

Walton, 25 Jun 1833, Estill Co KY, John D., b. 1819, Catherine, b. 1920 who married John B. Clemmons, 18 Jan 1838, Madison Co KY, and Jacob, b. 1826 (after father's death stated as 1822 which has to be wrong) who married Sarah Parson, 23 Apr 1845, Rockcastle, KY
Elizabeth Winkler (Davis & Lucas) claimed to have died 22 Apr 1859 in Estill Co - I find no proof, nor do I find her in the 1850 census in Estill Co.
