JOHN JEFFERSON WILLIAMS

(10 Nov 1792 - 17 Nov 1874)

John is said to have married Nancy Bowles in Warren Co TN. They moved to St. Francois Co MO in 1829 and raised a large family. WILLIAMS GENEALOGY lists only Lucinda, Sarah & Ambrose and gives no additional information about this family.

I found on the Warren Co TN USGenWeb page a link to the Warren Co. Tax List of Richard Cantrell, 1812
John "G" Williams was listed, as were Harden and James Williams - it would be a little early for his brothers, but certainly the given names are familiar names and quite possibly his uncles. John M. "Bowls" is on the list as are Pates and Cantrells. A Thomas White was also listed.

The Creek Indian Wars of 1814 were classified as part of the War of 1812. Several militia companies were organized in Warren Co, TN, including that of Capt. James Tait. A Muster Roll of company M, Infantry, 28 Jan 1814 to 10 May 1814:
43. Hardin Williams, Private
45. John J. Williams, Private

Living next to John & Nancy in 1860, were her sister Martha and husband Moses Cantrell, with another sister, Sarah Howard, in their household. The next household was that of R. C. White, age 24 - he was Richard Carroll White, son of James Polk White, and a nephew of Andrew B. White who married John & Nancy Williams's daughter Sarah.

I have not been able to find John J. & Nancy in 1870. Were they living with a married daughter?
In Nov of 1869, Nancy Williams certified she was present at the births of the children of her daughter Nancy E. Bennett when Nancy E. applied for her deceased husband's Civil War Pension. She stated she was the midwife and they are the only children in this family. She signed as Nancy (x) Williams and presumably is this Nancy.

John J. and Nancy are buried Libertyville Christian Cemetery, Libertyville, St. Francois Co, MO.
Only John is listed on FindAGrave. Born 10 Nov 1792, North Carolina. Died 17 Nov 1874, Knob Lick, St. Francois Co, Missouri. Note says he was married to Nancy M. Bowles in 1813. There is no picture and I wonder if this grave was marked at some later date. There were only 22 graves listed. However, FindAGrave also has Libertyville Christian Church Cemetery with 89 listings and Nancy is listed there.
Nancy M. Bowles, b. Nov 1796, SC. d. 28 Mar 1876, Knob Lick, St. Francois Co, MO. Married to John J. Williams in 1813. [submitted by the same person who had sent John J.'s entry]
and
Nancy M. Bowles Williams who is said to share a double tombstone with her husband, but no dates. These two entries submitted by two different people.
The majority of the graves in this second listing are the White and Moore families. None of the White graves were old enough to have been siblings of Andrew B. White.
