In 1869, on Nov 13, Nancy E. Bennett applied for Asa's Civil War pension (Pension #183646) in St. Francois County Court. She was then age 32. Asa was a Private, Co. F, 47th Infantry of MO. Her maiden name was Williams. They were married at the home of Esq. Crawford [JP]. Asa died at Farmington, on the 2 of Apr 1867 of chronic diarrhea & debility contracted in the line of duty. She listed names and birthdates of the children under sixteen at the time of his death. She signed her own name as Nancy E. Bennett.
Nancy Williams certified she was present at the birth; she is a midwife. They are the only children in this family. She signed as Nancy (x) Williams and presumably is her mother.
Asa's Discharge papers are in the file. His name shown there as Asa F. Bennett. He served under Capt. William P. Adair. He enlisted 23 Aug 1864 to serve six months and was discharged 29 Mar 1865 at Benton Barracks at expiration of his service. He was born Madison Co, MO and was 44 years of age; 6'2", fair complexion, blue eyes, black hair, by occupation a Farmer.
June Term, St. Francois Court, 4 Jun 1873. Elias S. Williams was appointed Curator or guardian of the Bennett children, all under the age of 16. Securities for his Bond of $1000 were John J. Williams and John K. Harris
He then applied for their pension on their behalf. He stated that Nancy Bennett had married James Hill on 11 Dec 1872. He again listed the children's births and stated that Asa Bennett was married only the one time. John J. Williams and Lewis J. Cundiff testified on his behalf. Dated 10 Jun 1873.

Elias Williams, Gardian & curator of the minor heirs of Asa Bennett: The court approprates the sum of $50 out of the Estate of said Minors for their, support, maintenance etc - ordered that the said Guardian pay same to their mother Nancy E. Hill and take receipt thereof.

Nancy married James Hill in 1872, but either the marriage did not work out, he was away from home, or he also died. She was again head of household in 1880, living in Benton Co, AR, Walnut Twp, Hh 189

Georgie Hill, dau, age 1, b. Arkansas

I did not find Nancy in 1900 or 1910, in Arkansas or Missouri. However, some of her Bennett children were in Barry Co, MO.

I believe she died prior to 1900. The marriage record of son Thomas Bennett, states he was not yet and 21 and permission was given by Nancy Hill, his mother, in July of 1885 - the record is in Barry Co, MO - which places her in that county.
Ancestry tree has claimed the following as being this person, but the location of the grave was puzzling until I discovered several of her Bennett children were buried in this cemetery and she was present in that county in 1885.

The same tree has examined her probate file, which was filed 4 March 1887, by her son John W. Bennett. Heirs were listed as John W., Nancy Allcock, Nettie Hagler, Mary Blankenship, Thomas Bennett, Emmie Hill and Georgie A. Hill. Son Richard Hill was not listed, although he stated in records that his mother was Nancy Hill.

I believe this to be incorrect regarding dates of birth and death....
