James Hill

(1844 - 1925)

There is a discrepancy concerning James Hill and his marriage to Nancy Bennett, particularly regarding her death and burial. There are two FindAGrave memorial with widely diverging dates of birth and death, and location. One of them has a picture of an actual stone which has "Nancy E. Hill, May 12, 1837 - Feb 21, 1887. It is in the Calton Cemetery, Monett, Barry Co, MO where it seems some of her Bennett children are also buried.

His Civil War Pension Index Card states his service as Co. I, 6th Ill. Cav. and was filed in Missouri, on 5 Aug 1889, as an invalid claim. Certificate #891988.

Also posted in an Ancestry Tree is a page from James A. Hill's Civil War pension application dated 18 April 1915 from Dale, Pottawatomie, OK. He was born in Franklin, Ill in 1844. He served in Company I, 6th Illinois Cavalry. James gave his post office at the time of enlistment as "DewCoy", Illinois. Lizy Scipworth was his first wife and they married near Benton, IL. His second wife was Nancy E. Williams, who he married in Farming, MO. He gave the name of who married both but the spelling and writing is so bad I cannot make sense of either name. He didn't know if there was any official record. He said both were dead and his former wife had died near Cassville, Mo (I don't know which former wife...) Nancy was Acy Benet's widow when he married her and he was a soldier. He has not had a wife for 30 years. He had two children - a daughter he does not remember that is dead and a son Richard born 7 Apr 1874, that is living. Then he says that Emmie Hill was the other that died (three children instead of two - he seems to have missed daugher Georgie altogether and she was very much alive).

In 1880, Nancy Hill had living in her household, her Bennett children - whose names and ages were stated in the pension application, as well as Emmy and Georgie Hill. There was no Richard listed in the household.

Richard Hill had a social security application stating his parents were Nancy Williams and James A. Hill.
