Noel Waddill

(28 Jan 1797 - Bet 1850 and 1860)

It is likely that Noel Waddill who married Selethia is the son, or grandson, of a man of the same name.
Online databases suggest a John Waddill born 1720 St. Peters Parish, New Kent Co. His son was a Noel Waddill born 1754 in New Kent who married Elizabeth Carter 1786 in Halifax. One son Charles, was born 9 Jan 1775 in Pittsylvania Co and he married Ann Marshall - they had a son Noel born 28 Jan 1797. But that does not explain the two Noels mentioned in the following deeds, the elder of whom was married to a Martha. Of course "Junior" did not necessarily denote a son of the same name in this time period.

Family research from a Manuscript titled "Genealogical Records of Richardsons and Waddills of Virginia and Kentucky" written by Mrs. Stacy [Pocahontas Hewell Hutchinson] in 1939 has information passed along from letters written in 1902 by Mrs. Mary Waddill of Woodville, McCracken Co KY. She is said to have been a great aunt of Mrs. Stacy and was 88 years old at the time the letters were written. Mary's father was Charles Waddell of Pittsylvania Co VA, son of a Noel Waddill. She gives a birth date of 28 Jan 1797 for Noel and a birth date for his father Charles as 9 Jan 1775.

1830 Census. Warren Co KY - A single man named Noel Waddill but he gave his age as 20-30 - not quite old enough for this Noel. Researchers have speculated he went on to Kentucky before bringing his family, but I doubt that. I believe the family was still in Virginia.
Pittsylvania Co VA
Noel Waddell: 2m -5 [Anderson & Calvin] 2m 5-10 [??? & Laban], 1m age 30-40 [Noel]
1f -5 [Eliza], 1f 20-30 [Seletha]
The Noel Waddill in Virginia lived next door to Charles "Waddle", age 60-70 who had no apparent spouse but perhaps 4 children in their late teens, early twenties, still at home - probably his father.
Other neighbors included John "Waters" [Walters] and Spires [Spears] Walters.

Other records from Warren Co support the fact that there was a very different Noel Waddill, as well as possibly an older Charles, in Warren Co. A deed as early as 11 Mar 1806 was witnessed by a Charles "Waddle" in Warren Co - no other deeds for a Waddill of any spelling were in Warren Co 1797 thru 1818. There is a Will in Warren Co, WB D, p.55, dated 7 Oct 1832 of Noel "Waddle" whose wife was Ruth - he referred to his sister Nancy Walters and half-sister Patsy Akin. He apparently had no children. Nancy Walters was the wife of Robert Walters, son of Jackson Walters.

1840 Census. Christian Co KY.
Noel Waddill: 2m under 5 [Robert V. & William], 2m age 5-10 [Marshall & Anderson], 1m 10-15 [Calvin], 1m 15-20 [Laban], 1m 40-50 [Noel]
1f age 5-10 [Mary], 2f 10-15 [Eliza & Martha Jane], 1f 30-40 [Seletha]

In 1850, in Caldwell Co KY, not only was Noel Waddell and family present, but also a James B. Waddill, age 55, born in VA - a likely candidate for a brother or cousin to Noel. James' apparent wife was Louisa A., age 44, also born in VA.
Living with James B. & Lousia were: George H. Crawley, age 25, b. LA, Edna P. Crawley, 17, b. LA, and John R. Jackson, age 9, b. Caldwell Co KY.
