Ann/Mary Waddill

(27 Feb 1814 - )

This is Great Aunt Mary Waddill, whose letters had fallen into the hands of Mrs. Stacy. There are some difficulties with her information. She claimed to have changed her given name from Ann to Mary and stated she could not remember why.

In the will of Charles Waddill, the only daughter named that could have been this lady was Nancy Williams, wife of Coleman Williams. On one of the last pages of the Stacy manuscript there is a mention of Aunt Mary Williams. I have no clue why Mrs. Stacy did not make that clear, nor why there was not more information about "Aunt Mary" and her own immediate family. Mrs. Stacy said she was of Woodville, McCracken Co KY, but I could find no indication that Aunt Mary ever lived in McCracken Co.

In the 1900 census, the only lady I could find in Kentucky that came close to being this one was in Gainesville, Allen Co KY. Backing up from that year, it seemed possible she was Coleman William's wife, had had several children, etc.
Hh 269
Mrs. Mary A. Williams, b. Mar 1815, age 85. Widowed. She was married 15 years. She had 5 children, 3 living. She was born in Virginia as were both her parents. [Perhaps she misunderstood the question about the marriage [maybe she'd been a widow for 15 years] and number of children - earlier censuses reveal the problem.]
Living with Mrs. Mary was Sarah A. Williams, marked as "So.Dauter" - an abbreviation not found elsewhere in this census and I've not seen before, b. Oct 1827, age 72 and single. Sarah was b. KY, her father b. VA, her mother b. SC.
[This birth year doesn't work out too well - but there does seem to have been a daughter named Sarah/Sally who was born about 1845. Was she perhaps a stepdaughter?]

Found indexed in 1880: Sarah A. Williams, age 51, living with "mother" Mary A. Williams, Allen Co KY. But not linked to correct page. Looked through until I found them, Household 52
Mary A. Williams, age 66, widowed, b. VA as were her parents.
Benjamin V. age 19, son, Laborer on farm, single, b. KY, parents b. VA [Did "Bluford" change his name? Or is this actually a different Mary Williams, not the daughter of Charles Waddill. See below.]
Sarah A. Williams, age 51, daughter, single, b. KY, father b. VA, mother b. SC

I cannot be certain that the above Mary is Ann Waddill, daughter of Charles & Ann Marshall Waddill that married Coleman Williams, as the data doesn't quite fit what we know. She may have been in McCracken Co, indexed in some strange way or living with someone we don't know. The following would certainly be her family:

1840 Census. Todd Co KY
Coleman Williams 2m -5 ["C" and James], 1m age 30-40 [Coleman]
2f -5 [Ann & H. D.], 1f 5-10 [???], 1f 20-30 [Mary?]

1850 Census. All Initials. In 1834, Mary's father gave her name as Nancy Williams so I cannot explain the initial.
Calloway Co KY, Hh 409
C. Williams, age 47, b. VA. "H" Williams, age 36, b. VA
The rest of the family born in KY. C. age 16, male [prob Coleman Jr]. J. age 14, male [James], N. C. age 12, female [Ann/Nancy?], H. D. age 10, female, D., age 8, male [Doctor]. S.F. age 7, female [Sarah], J. age 5, male [John], T., age 3, male [Thomas], E. J. age 1, female [Eliza]

1860 Census. Calloway Co KY Hh 183
Coleman Williams, age 56, b. VA. Mary age 45, b. VA
Born in KY: James 25, Ann 21, Doctor 18, Sarah 16, John 15, Thos 14, Eliza 12, Robert 10, Harriet 6, Bluford age 1.

Definitely Coleman Williams and Mary:
1870 Census. Cuba, Graves Co KY Hh 276
Coleman Williams, age 65, Farmer, b. VA
Mary, age 56, b. VA
Sally, 25, b. KY as were the rest of the children listed. [This seems to be the Sarah living with Mary in Allen Co in 1900 but she is much younger. It is actually possible for all these children to have been Ann/Mary's.]
John, 23. Thomas, 21. Liza, 18. Harriet, 16. Bluford, 13.
Doctor Williams, age 25, lived in the next household and he was also born in KY - had Frances, age 29, living with him, no children.
