Individual Details
Thomas Meriwether
(Abt 1714 - 1756)
I have listed only the children Nicholas who married the daughter of the Rev. William Douglas, and Lucy who married William Lewis. Other children of Thomas & Elizabeth included Francis who married Martha Jamison and moved to Georgia in 1784; David who married Mary Harvie, Mary who married Peachy Ridgeway Gilmer, Elizabeth who married Thomas Johnson, Sarah who married Michale Anderson, Ann who was the first wife of Richard Anderson, Mildred who married John Gilmer, Thomas who died in infancey, and Jane who married Samuel Dabney. Their were 11 known children in all.
Thomas married Elizabeth Thornton. A Thomas is placed here as a son of David & Ann Holmes Meriwether by more than one reference. However, reading the Will [probated 1744] of David's father is curious in that David's sons are listed as Nicholas, Francis, James & William, with no Thomas. Likewise, at least three times in the Will, Thomas is listed as a grandson, son of William, along with John & Richard as sons of William. The Anderson book on the Lewis/Meriwether families also places Thomas as a son of David with wife Elizabeth Thornton; but also lists a Thomas as a son of William, this Thomas Meriwether married to Jane Lewis, daughter of Robert Lewis & Jane Meriwether. It is curious that both of the Thomas Meriwethers are listed as dying in 1756.
Hening's Statutes, Feb 1752, David Crawford had made a deed to David Meriwether dated 12 May 1697. [As David Crawford made gifts of land to other grandsons, presumably this deed did refer to this David Meriwether.] David Meriwether had died leaving his eldest son Thomas as his heir who was now docking the entail of 200 acres and moving to lands in Fredericksville Parish, Louisa Co. Thomas Meriwether sold the tract to Reuben Skelton.

"Thomas Meriwether
Thoma Meriwether was born about 1713, the first child of David Meriwether and Anne Holmes. He was a large landowner and prominent in local politics in Virginia, being one of the Justices of Louisa County, and numbered among his friends Peter Jefferson, father of Thomas Jefferson; Col. Robert Lewis who married Jane Meriwether,; and Dr. Thomas Walker, who married his cousin Nicholas Merwether's widow, Mildren (Thornton) Meriwether, and who also the sister of his wife, Elizabeth Thornton.
His holdings in Virginia were due almost entirely to the bequest of his grandfather, Nicholas Merwether II.
About 1735, Thomas married Elizabeth Thorton."
