Cty. Lou, Book: 5, Page: 393, Elizabeth Johnson, Type: Will, Date: 14-Sep-1812
Will of Elizabeth Johnson, wish debts to be paid. To my daughter Mary Winston a Negro boy William (son to Amy) to my son David Johnson a Negro man Wilson (son to his woman Bibb) To my daughter Ann Meriwether Barret during her life my woman Peach and her dau. Lucy Ann with their increase and after death of my daughter Ann they be equally divided between all of her children. To my grandson Thomas Johnson Barret a Negro child (son to Peachy) named James. Taking into consideration many services performed for my family by John Kinney and not wishing him to suffer in his old age my will is that $100 be raised and put into the hands of my son Thomas to be used for his support or if he should live longer then I leave as a solemn injunction on all my children and grandchildren that the old man should not be permitted to suffer. Any remainder after his death to return to my estate. I among others was sued as executrix of my husband Thomas Johnson (shff) in sundry suits by British creditors and have expended a considerable sum of money in my defense which I think I ought to recover and feeling myself under great obligations to the Reverend John Poindexter for his assistance in shaking off said suits I give him all that he may be able to recover back of said money expended. I give to my granddaughters Lucy and Polly Poindexter and my grandson Waller S. Poindexter 1/6 part of my estate that my remain after the aforesaid specified legacies being the part my deceased daughter their mother would have received. I do not exclude the rest of my daughter Elizabeth's children for want of affection but because their father wished the legacy disposed of amongst them as above. The residue of my estate I give to my daughters Mary Winston, Lucy Quarles, Rebecca Winston, Sarah Overton and Ann M. Barret to be equally divided except Sarah Overton who is to have $300 less than the others on account of a Negro woman loaned her and now in her possession named Alice. I understand that no part of the estate of my late husband can be sold for the payment of my debts and to raise the fund before mentioned for the support of John Kinney and being doubtful a sufficiency I cannot believe that any of my five daughters would object to a sale of so much of the estate I received from my husband to make up the deficiency should that be the case or any of my three grandchildren children to my daughter Elizabeth should object, if so those objecting shall be excluded from all share of my estate of which I have the right to dispose. I appoint my son David Johnson and my son-in-laws John Poindexter, Joseph Winston, William Quarles and Charles Barret executors. 6 July 1812. Sig. Elizabeth Johnson. wit. E. Pendleton, John L. Bragg. Rec. 14 Sept. 1812.
