Nicholas Meriwether

(11 Feb 1719/20 - 3 May 1758)

Nicholas was named in Will of his grandfather. Received 2000 acres.
Suggested wives include Mary Pryor or Frances Morton. If he was ever married to Mary Pryor it must have been a brief early marriage. The will of John Morton Jordan names his half sister as Frances [Morton] Meriwether; after the death of Nicholas Meriwether she married Samuel Pryor Jr. of Goochland Co. Son George's will left his mother Frances Pryor an annual stipend; will signed 7 Jul 1775.

He served as a Colonel on the staff of Major General Edward Braddock in the French & Indian Wars. In June, 1755, the general was mortally wounded near Ft. Duquesne, near present day Pittsburg, and reportedly fell into Col. Meriwether's arms. Upon Nicholas' return, General Braddock's sister, Lady Braddock, presented Col. Meriwether with a scarlet coat embroidered in gold as a token of regard. A nephew of Col. Nicholas, Nicholas Meriwether (1726-1772), the son of Thomas Meriwether & Elizabeth Thornton, was also present at the battle and for many years his descendants mistakenly thought he was the recipient of the coat.
