Miflin Dallas McKim

(Sep 1844 - 30 Apr 1901)

Dallas was probably NOT born in Ireland although it said that on Paul McKim's death certificate - In the 1930 census, Paul & Victor McKim both stated that both parents were born in Ohio, as did Guy and Laura.

His name is curious. There were two groups of McKim males in Pennsylvania ca 1790-1800 - one was the family of David McKim who married Sarah Stringer and was in Chester Co, PA. However, I found another David in Mifflin Co, Pa in 1790 - along with a Robert McKim. This coincidence with the unusual name of Miflin makes me somewhat unsure that David of Belmont Co Ohio has been placed in the right family. It is possible that these two McKim families were related in someway, too. There was also a quite famous Philadelphian - Thomas Mifflin, who was among other achievements, a Major Gen. in the Continental Army during the Revolution and a representative to the Constitutional Convention.

Found in the 1870 Census in Pease Township, Belmont Co, Ohio:
Dallas McKim, age 27, born Ohio. A Retail Grocer
Lorinda A. age 27, keeping house and also born in Ohio
Harry P. age 5, born Ohio.

1880 Census. Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO
M. D. McKimm, 37, grain merchant, b. OH
L. A., female, 34, wife, b. OH
Paul, 14, son, b. OH
Victor, 7, son, b. Kansas
Guy, 2, son, b. Kansas

In 1900, Mifflin & Lorinda stated they had been married for 30 years [since 1870]. Victor wasn't born until 1872. I think it possible, even likely, that McKim had a brief earlier marriage and Lorinda was not Paul's mother, or they simply didn't know how long they'd been married. However, in 1900, Lorinda also stated she had had four children - Victor, Guy, & Laura were all still living at home. Paul McKim's death certificate also states his mother was Lorinda. Either the stated length of the marriage was wrong or there is more to this story....

In 1870, there were two older McKims in the same township that offer possibilities for parents of Dallas: Isabella McKim, age 70, born in Pennsylvania and living alone.
and Joseph McKim age 67, born PA with wife wife Jane 52, Rebecca 22, Martha 20, Joseph 18, and David A. age 13. Further research on Joseph eliminates him from possibility as a parent, but he could have been his uncle. Subsequent research reveals that Isabella was the second wife of David McKim - she was Dallas's stepmother.

I could not find the McKims in Belmont Co in 1850 and 1860, until I began to search just on given names. In 1850, the name had been spelled as "McCym".

In 1880, M. D. McKimm was living in Kansas City. Age 37, born Ohio as were both parents. He was a Grain Merchant. L. A. McKimm, his wife, age 34, born Ohio as were both her parents. Children were Paul age 14, born in Ohio. Victor age 7 and Guy age 2, both born in Kansas.

Listed in the Kansas City City Directory, 1880, is Mifflin D. McKim, residence 1708 Cherry.
Also on Cherry St - at 1121, was Americus V. McKim Malster [finding him there is what led me to finding their parents - he was Miflin's brother]
In the 1883 City Directory was Miflin D. McKim, at 2106 Holmes. Paul McKim, at the same address workd for T. O. Hall. America V. McKim (A. V. McKim & Co.) was at 1112 Cherry in this edition.
In 1887, Americus V. was listed at 1807 Cherry and also with an ice house at 919 1/2 Main. I believe these next two were his sons as their residence was the same. Horace McKim worked in the City Treasurer's department; Theodore T. McKim was a pitcher for the KC BaseBall Club. In 1889, the Directory still had the above as well as Byron McKim - I believe a third son.

Interestingly, Miflin Dallas and family didn't appear in these directories 1887-1889, although he was in Kansas City for the 1900 Census - perhaps they moved out of the city for awhile, or lived on the Kansas side of the city.
