Individual Details
Americus V. McKim
(26 Feb 1840 - 10 Feb 1910)
I believed it was more than coincidence that Americus V. McKim and Mifflin Dallas McKim were both in Kansas City for some years. Americus is said to have been born in Belmont Co, Ohio, in 1840 - four years before Miflin. I found a marriage for Americus V. McKim to Mary A. Tilton, 23 Jun 1864, Belmont Co. I've never found a marriage for Miflin, although Lorinda's Alexander family were definitely settled in Belmont Co. Americus must have been quite a character as he was a maltster, as well as a brick manufacturer and attained everlasting fame by owning the first professional baseball team in Kansas City. Various bios about him online say the he moved to Kansas City in 1868. He died 10 Feb 1910, penniless, and was buried without a marker in Elmwood Cemetery, where members of Milflin's family are also buried. Americus was survived by his wife and four children. Some years later a simple marker was placed to commemorate his achievement in promoting baseball.
I found Americus with his parents, age 10, in 1850, Belmont Co Ohio. They were Hh 1283. In Hh 1286, was the household of Joel Tilton, age 37 was a daughter Mary, age 12 - undoubtedly this was his wife-to-be. In 1860, his father had remarried but he was still at home, age 20.
Americus and family were in the 2nd Ward, Kansas City in the 1870 census. He was enumerated as "E. V." McKim, age 30, a Commission Merchant, born Ohio. Mary A. was also born in Ohio and age 30. Theodore, 4, and Horace, 2, were born in Ohio.

Mary, 35, b. Ohio, from MO
T. T., age 9, b. Ohio, from MO
Byron & Flora, both age 1, born in Kansas
Listed in the Kansas City City Directory, 1880, is Mifflin D. McKim, residence 1708 Cherry.
Also on Cherry St - at 1121, was Americus V. McKim Malster [finding him there is what led me to finding their parents - he was Miflin's brother]
In the 1883 City Directory was Miflin D. McKim, at 2106 Holmes. Paul McKim, at the same address worked for T. O. Hall. America V. McKim (A. V. McKim & Co.) was at 1112 Cherry in this edition.
In 1887, Americus V. was listed at 1807 Cherry and also with an ice house at 919 1/2 Main. I believe these next two were his sons as their residence was the same. Horace McKim worked in the City Treasurer's department; Theodore T. McKim was a pitcher for the KC BaseBall Club. In 1889, the Directory still had the above as well as Byron McKim - I believe a third son.
In 1880, both Americus and Miflin lived on Cherry Street. Americus in a single family home at 1121. A. V. McKim, age 41, Maltster, b. Ohio, father b. PA, mother b. Ohio. M. A., female, wife, age 41, b. Ohio, father b. Ohio, mother b. PA. Theo, age 14, Horace age 12, and Byron age 6, born in Kansas.
Kansas City Star, 17 Feb 1885
Mr. A. V. McKim, president of the Kansas City baseball association, today stated to an Evening Star reporter that as soon as the weather would permit the new grounds would be enclosed and everything put in shape for the first game of the season. The seating capacity of the grounds will be 8,000 of which 5,000 will be reserved seats. The first game, not of the championship series, will be between the home team and the St. Louis club, and will be played on March 20. The first of the championship games will be played about April 16, on which day the western league season opens. The home team will open the season with the Milwaukee or Cleveland club.
At present there are seven clubs in the western league, and an effort is being made to secure the eighth. What city will be represented in the league as the eight in number is not yet known but it will probably be Detroit.
Mr. McKim, in speaking of the home club for next season, stated that it would be a much stronger team than that of 1884 and would contain several of the finest players in the country. Thirteen players, including Daly, have signed with the Kansas City club and the team now is lacking in nothing but a change catcher.

Missouri Death Certificate #477
Americus V. McKim died 10 Feb 1910 of apoplexy, apparently at his residence 230 North Park Ave, Kansas City, Jackson Co. He was born 26 Feb 1840 in Ohio. Married. Occuplation listed as Founder, Brick Mfgr. Parents unknown. Byron McKim of the same address was the informant. Buried Elmwood Cemetery.
In 1910, Mary A. McKim was age 71, a widow. She says she has had three children, and all are living - she actually had four unless one of the children has died since 1900. She has her "own income". Living with Mary were Byron, son, age 32 , a bottler at a liquor plant, and Daisy P., daughter, age 27, working in the office of a tailor shop.
I never discovered what the "V." stood for - could it have been Victor?
