1850 Census in Shelby Co IN. Stewart, first wife Sarah, and the two sons. Wm F. was 3, John T. age 9 moths. Although Stewart apparently named these two boys among his children in his Civil War Pension Application, I have not been able to track them after 1860-1870. Did Sarah die? (Yes - about 1850, when John was still a babe.) The boys may have been left behind in Indiana with Harris relatives when Stewart moved to Iowa.

Samuel B. Harris married Mary Heck in Shelby Co on 14 Oct 1847.

Elizabeth Harris married Samuel Cutsinger in Shelby Co IN on 12 Dec 1839.
In 1870, both John Wishard and Stephen Hendrickson were still living with the Cutsingers in Shelby Co IN.

Sarah (Harris) Wishard, Samuel B. Harris, and Elizabeth (Harris) Cutsinger were the children of Thomas Harris. who was living in Jackson Twp, Shelby Co IN, 1840:

Ancestry online shows Stewart Wishard has having served in the Union Army, Company D, 10th Missouri Infantry, as a Sgt. There is an invalid persion application filed 26 Oct 1888, Certificate #762466 from Alabama - noted later.

It would appear Stewart had married for a third time to the widow Alla Moom. I have not found a marriage record. The child Willy, age 2, was not listed as a child by Stewart in his pension application unless he had two sons named William. Susan may also be a child of Alla as in 1880 she gave the place of birth of her mother as Alabama.

I found a possible 4th & 5th marriage for Stewart Wishard. Jackson Co AL.

This marriage seems to have produced the child Myrtle, born Dec of 1884 and said to have been blind from birth. In his Pension Application, Stewart stated he was a Widower and his wife's maiden name was Webb.
Stewart Wishard to Jane Phillips on 6 Jun 1887. Married by J. L. Jones, Justice of the Peace.

1900 Census. Grant Co, Indiana
Living in the Marion Branch of the National Military Home. Stewart Wishard, age 87. [He would actually be only age 75] Born Indiana. Listed as "Single". "Destination" as St. Louis, Mo. These homes were for the purpose of housing invalid Confederate pensioners - rather than listing birthplaces for their parents, there was instead a column labeled "Distination" - I have no clue as to the meaning of this column - Wishard was discharged from the service in St. Louis.

"Find A Grave" search online revealed that Serg't. Stewart Wishard died 11 Jul 1906 and is buried Marion National Cemetery, Marion, Grant Co IN.

The Pension File #762466 of Stewart Wishard is lengthy.
His first Declaration was dated 3 Oct 1888, before the judge of the Probate Court in Jackson Co, Alabama. Stewart gave his age as 66 [or born 1822 instead of 1825 - he seems to always have overstated his age] and said he was a resident of Brownsboro in Madison Co AL. He enrolled in July of 1861 in Company D of the 10th Regiment of Missouri Volunteers commanded by Capt. D. C. Dorathy. He was discharged at St. Louis MO in November of 1864. He gave his height as 6 feet, 1 1/2 inches; complexion, Fair; hair, Brown; eyes Blue. While in the line of duty at High Hill, MO during the month of August, 1861 he contracted chronic diarrhea with resulting piles and prolapse of bowels, by reason of exposure. He was treated at High Hill that fall by Dr. Payne and at various other places. He served three years and three months and has not since been in the military. Since leaving the service he has resided in Alabama & Iowa, occupation that of farmer. He was a farmer and in sound health when he enlisted but he is now greatly disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor. Signed: Stewart Wishard Wit: Wm. H. Norward, G. T. Original Invalid Claim. To Stewart Wishard at LimRock, Jackson Co AL. Pension of $6 per month beginning 26 Oct 1888 and ending 21 Aug 1890. 20 Apr 1892 was reviewed again and approved.
Document from the War Department dated 12 Jan 1889 states that he was a 1st Sgt, Co D, 10th Regt, Mo Infantry, enrolled 25 Jul 1861 at Bloomfield Iowa for 3 years. This document sums up his muster rolls. In May & Jun of 1862 he was absent sick in Camp on Clear Creek. Jul & Aug 1863 he was absent on a 30 day furlough beginning 29 Aug 1863 to go to Bloomfield, Iowa. [This could been at the time of the death of wife Frances???] 24 Aug 1864 he was mustered out as 2nd Sgt, Stewart Wishard. Regimental Hospital records that begin 25 Aug 1862, show him admitted 1 Dec 1863 with disease of kidneys. 4 Jul 1864 he was admitted with lumbago.
22 Aug 1890 Application filed 22 Aug 1890. Steward Wishard still lived at Brownsboro, Madison Co AL
5 Feb 1898. Stewart was asked to give his marital status. He said he was a Widower and his wife's maiden name had been Webb. He didn't give any record of the marriage, nor did he answer the question regarding previous wives. He was asked to give names of children living and their date of birth. He had no record of their births but gave these names: John Thompson, William Thomas, Sabrina, Susana, and Myrtle.
[This does not account for the child Willy, born two years after Susana, nor did he name Surena, born about 1855 - the assumption is that they had died]
5 Feb 1889 Doctor's exam at Maysville, AL certified by H. L. Daniel, JP Date of exam was 31 Jan 1889. D. H. McLain, M.C. Stewart was 6 feet 1 1/2 inches, weighed 179 pounds, was 67 year old. Pensioner was taken with chronic diarrhea in 1861 while in the U.S. Army....Fixed the degree of disability at 1/2.
5 Sep 1889. Stewart Wishard of Limrock, Jackson Co AL made Affidavit. He has chronic diarrhea & resulting piles & prolapse of the bowels. He was never treated for the disease while in Service but was treated by Dr. J. Easley at Drakeville, Davis Co Iowa for which he paid him $30 to no effect. This was immediately after his return home. 12 Jul 1890 Proof of Disability. Affadavit of James C. Quigley of Bailey, Hand Co, South Dakota. He was acquainted with Stewart Wishard while at Corrinth, MS the Spring & Summer of 1862. He had contracted diarrhea and resulting piles with relaxation of the bowels and was terribly reduced. He rallied some time in the fall and winter and kept with his command but was not fit for severe duty at all or very little. After discharge, I lived neighbor to him for two years, 1867 & 1866, at Drakeville, Iowa when he moved to Alabama. All this time he suffered & showed the effects of his disability. When he enlisted he was a strong stout energetic man, a good true soldier and stuck to the service and his duty so far as able. I knew him for at least five years.
20 Jul 1890 Affidavit of J. C. Renfroe age 27 years, resident of Gurley, Madison Co, AL He has been acquainted with Stewart Wishard since 1878 and has complained with prolapsus of the bowel and piles. He has had trouble ever since I have known him and he says he contracted them while in service. He is not able to do manual labor. He has a certificate from a board of physicians showing he is permanently disabled.
Jul 1890 Affidavit of William T. Nail, age 46 of Gurley, Madison Co AL. I have been acquainted with Mr. Stewart Wishard since the fall of 1867 and he was complaining with prolapsus of the bowels all this time. He as been able to some manual labor up to the last two years and he has been examined by a board of physicians and has a certificate.
28 Jul 1890. Brownsboro, Madison Co AL. Stewart Wishard age 68 declares for invalid pension. T. R. Hall and W. T. Nail witnessed the signature of Stewart Wishard. Thomas R. Hall had known him for 26 years; William T. Neal had known him for 24 years, both of Gurley, Madison Co AL
22 Aug 1890 Additional Invalid Pension. $12 per month beginning Aug 22 1890. Resubmitted for adm on 12 Apr 1892 Contined at $12 Chronic diarrhea, disease of eyes, general debility.
Aug 1890 Proof of Disability. Affadavit of Marcus O. Frost of Topeka, Shawnee Co Kansas. He gave his age as 52 years and stated he was with Stewart Wishard in Corinth MS when about April, May, Jun of 1862 is was disabled with chronic diarrhea, resulting in other complications. He advised Wishard to accept a discharge and go home, but he declined desiring to stay his time. Frost was 1st Sgt and Wishard his 2nd Sgt - he knew him for at least three years and was continually with him in camp.
30 Sep 1890 Affidavit of William J. Moon age 32 years of Floral City, Citrus Co, FL and Wiliam T. Nail of Gurley, Madison Co AL. Mr. Moon stated he had known Mr. Wishard since 1866 and he has always complained of the piles. I have seen him suffer so much. He is at this time diasbled to be manual labor. Mr. Nail stated that he had known Stewart Wishard since 1867 and lived in his neighborhood. He was past doing any manual labor for some time. It is growing worse on him as he grows older. He is now about 69 years old.
18 Aug 1891 Stewart Wishard of Larkinsville, Jackson Co AL filed application uinder Act of Jun 27, 1890. He had previously applied under the old law. Signed: Stewart Wishard and Witnessed by J. A. Kyle and J. G. Stuart. James Jordon and D. O. Austin of Scottsboro who had known him two years also signed.
19 Aug 1891 Examined at Decatur, Morgan Co AL by a Board of three men. He was said to then be 6 feet tall, weighed 178 pounds, and was age 68. He was awarded a 4/18 rating for disease of his eyes [said to have trachoma of both eyes] ; 4/18 for chronic diarrhea and 6/18 for old age.
31 Aug 1891 Affidavit of Stewart Wishard, living in Gurley, Madison Co AL. He enlisted in the state of Iowa and the Regt was composed of different states. He can not find the where abouts of medical advisors who treated him during the War.
26 Sep 1891 Another Affadavit of James C. Quigley of St. Lawrence, Hand Co, SD. Gave his age as 51. He was well acquainted with Wishard when he was discharged in Aug 1864 and one year thereafter, after he arrived home at Drakeville, Iowa. At the time of his discharge and for the year afterwards he was afflicted with chronic diarrhea, piles and Prolapse of the bowels. He was under medical treatment for that time. He could not work but little. I saw him as often as twice a week, lived neighbor to him, he worked at his house making and peddled brooms there from. He was treated by Dr. Easly at that time.
28 Oct 1891 The War Deparment certified that Marcus O. Frost and James C. Quigley were present during the period 30 Jun 1862, near Riply, MS and 31 Aug 1862, near Jacinto, MS, in Co D, 10th MO Vol.
3 Nov 1891 Affidavit of James Adair aged 55 years, resident of Brownsboro, Madison Co AL. I have known Wishard twenty-three years. At the time of his return from the army he complained of piles and chronic diarrhea. He was in bad health and under medical treatment. I was with him often and know he was unable to work. He has been in this condition until about two years ago, His condition is now that he has return of the prolapsus at times when the bowels are out of order.
9 Nov 1891 Affidavit of W. D. Steger, aged 45 years, resident of Gurley, Madison Co AL. He has known Stewart Wishard about twenty years, since the fall of 1871 and he has told me several times of his trouble with his bowels. I was with him often in the same neighborhood and was aware that he was under treatment. Sometimes he was much worse than others. He was often forced to do work that he was unfit for.
9 Nov 1891 Affidavit of Thomas Lancaster, aged 56 years, resident of Gurley, Madison Co AL. He has known Stewart Wishard for four years and he has told me several times of his trouble. I was with him often in the same neighborhood and was aware of his troubles and that he was under treatment. Some times worse than others and he was forced to do work that he was unable to do.
9 Feb 1892 LimRock, Jackson Co AL. Stewart Wishard, aged 68 years. Sight became impaired about the year 1877 or 1878. Don't know what caused my sight to become impaired. I further state that said disability is not due to nor was it caused by vicious habits.
3 Dec 1892 Madison Co AL. Stewart Wishard, a resident of Gurley, Madison Co AL requests examination for a higher disabilty rating as he is getting worse as he grows older. Signed: Stewart Wishard. Witnesses by John W. Wortham and T. C. Daniel of Maysville, AL.

10 Jun 1903 Surgeon's Certificate. Examined by Board at Wabash, IN. Age 81 years, height: 5'11", weight: 200 pounds, complexion: fair, eyes: blue, hair: light, occupation: farmer. Chronic diarrhea and disease of rectum. Senile trembling. Rate 12/18 disability.
10 Oct 1903 Answer of request for military & medical history of "Steward" Wishard. Says that Missouri roll shows his age as 36 years. He was wounded slightly, in the thigh, at the battle near Iarka MS on 19 Sep 1862. Treated Mar 26, 28 & Apr 2-5, 1863 - diagnosis not stated. Jul 22-24, 1864 - Lumbago, returned to duty.
22 Oct 1903 Restoration and Increase Invalid Pension. Stewart was approved for renewal of his pension but with no increase. His pension was now $12.00 per month.
10 Jun 1905 Stewart Wishard stated his daughter was blind and married to a man who was blind also. He was wondering if there was any pension provision.
11 Jul 1906 Marion Branch National Home for D.V.S., Indiana. Stewart Wishard, late D Co, 10 Regt MO, Pension, Certificate #762466, DIED at this Branch on the 11th day of Jul 1906. Stamped: Rec'd 18 Jul 1906.
14 Jul 1906 Marion Branch, National Home. Stewart Wishard died at this Branch Hospital on 11 Jul 1906. He died of Senility; he was a widower. Next of kin: Mrs. Myrtle Brinkman, daughter, Kokomo, IN
21 Jun 1907 Overton & Barnes, Attorneys at Law. Letter to Bureau of Pension regarding a client whose father was a soldier in the War of the Rebellion for more than ninety days and died about a year ago, at the time, a pensioner. The client is blind, totally, since infancy, is married and about 35 years of age. [She was actually age 23 or 24 according to the 1900 & 1910 Census.] Please advise.
28 Jun 1907 Bureau of Pensions asks for additional information re the daughter and her father.
3 Jul 1907 Overton & Barnes. The daughter is Myrtle Brinkman, 138 Indiana Ave., Kokomo, IN. The father is Stewart Wishard, who died at the Soldiers' Home in Marion, IN on 11 Jul 1906. He was a member of Co. D, 10th Mo. Inf, certificate #762466. He died unmarried, his wife having died several years prior to his death.
11 Jul 1907 Reply to Mrs. Myrtle Brinkman, 138 Indiana Avenue, Kokomo, Indiana. In response to your communication of the 3rd instant, received the 5th, wherein it is stated that you are the daughter of Steward Wishard.....There is no provision of law under which pension can be granted to the child of a deceased soldier or sailor by reason of permanent helplessness or otherwise, who was over sixteen years of age at the date of the father's death. Commissioner of the Bureau of Pensions, Dept of Interior.

His military history listed as: Enlisted 25 Jul 1861, Bloomfield, Iowa. He was a Srgt in the 10th MO. Inf. Discharged 24 Aug 1864 at St. George, Mo. at the expiration of his term. Disabled with hemorrhoids & Eye Disorder contracted in 1863, in the field.
He was born Indiana, age 72 at the time of the history, 6 feet tale, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer by occupation. Residence was Mt. Auburn, IN. Listed as "Single". Nearest relatives were Sally Ovensand & Francis Allen of Mt. Auburn [Frances was his sister]
He was drawing $12 pension. Admitted to the Marion Branch, Sep 24, 1895. He died in the Branch hospital on 11 Jul 1906, cause stated as Senility. He was buried Grave No. 1194, Circle No. 9, #1211. Pension Certificate 762.466. Money on his person was $5.76. His personal effects were appraised at $11.56 and sent to Myrtle J. Brinkman, Daughter, Kokomo, INd., Jany 12, 1907.

Stewart Wishard died 11 Jul 1906 at the National Military Home, Center Twp, Grant Co, IN Cause of death was senility - he was 85, no birth date given, born Indiana. He had been a Farmer. Buried at the Home, 13 Jul 1906.

Stewart is buried at Marion National Cemetery, Marion, Grant County, Indiana.
