John W. Wishard Dies after Long Illness
Funeral Services Friday Afternoon at the Home
John W. "Chub" Wishard, one of Franklin's well known citizens and for more than eighteen years custodian of the Johnson County court house, died Wednesday at 8 o'clock at his home, 459 Young street, after an illness of more than two years from kidney trouble. While he had been ill this long period of time, still there were intervals when he would feel a great deal better and would be able to be up and about the house. His last illness had confined him to his home about three weeks.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home. burial will be in Green lawn cemetery.
Mr. Wishard, or "Chub" as he was known to all of his friends, was born in Blue River township on august 15, 1850 (1849), and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Wishard, pioneers of that section of the county. When Mr. Wishard was a mere baby, his mother died and he was taken into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Cutsinger, of near Edinburg, where he was reared to maturity. Mr. Wishard's mother and Mrs. Cutsinger were sisters and Mrs. Cutsinger reared him from an infant to young manhood, giving him the same care and attention as if he were her own son.
On March 6th, 1878, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Israel, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William W. Israel, who with three sons, Frank, Ivory and Clyde, survive. One son died in infancy.
After his marriage, Mr. Wishard lived in Amity for a short time and when Samuel Cutsinger built the starch factory here in Franklin, the plant that is now occupied by the Franklin Food Products Company, he moved to Franklin to take a position in the new factory and he had lived here continuously since 1880. One of the first things he did after settling in Franklin was to buy a home and begin paying for it and with the help of his thrifty wife, he soon owned his home where he has lived for over forty years and where he has reared his family.
Mr. Wishard has been a member of the Franklin Christian church for forty years. He was also a member of the Franklin Lodge of Red Men. He was always courteous and kindly; a good friend and neighbor and a man who held the high regard of all who knew him for his honesty and integrity.
One of the coincidences of Mr. Wishard’s death is that it should follow within less than a week, the death of John E. Legan. Mr. Legan was for many years custodian of the Johnson county court house and when he retired from that position he was succeeded by Mr. Wishard, who held the position over eighteen years. Their deaths being so closely together recalls the fact that their terms of office were together, and their deaths occurred in the same order in which they held position at the Johnson county court house.

When son Frank W. Wishard married Mida Henderson, 30 Jun 1903, Marion, IN, he was age 24; Mida was 22. Frank stated his father as John Wishard, his mother's maiden name was Israel. Mida's father was Joshua Henderson; her mother's maiden name Burnett.
