Olive Elvira "Alla" Jenkins

(1836 - 1879)

Born 1835, Madison Co, Alabama. Find A Grave Memorial# 130985185 states that her burial is unknown, but she probbly died about 1879. Olive's parents were Augustine Jenkins and Barbara Minton.

Alla married first to Richard Moon, 28 Sep 1854. The marriage was performed by Justice of the Peace, John T. Haden, in Madison Co, AL.

I have not found this marriage record to Stewart Wishard, nor am I sure if Alla was the mother of Susana Wishard. I don't know what happened to the 2nd wife Frances Huffman, nor the daughter Surena who was not mentioned when her father listed his children on his Civil War Pension Application. Given the ages of the children in 1870, it appears that Alla had Solomon & Mary by a previous marriage; Sabrina was the child of Frances, and probably Susan & Willy were children of Steward Wishard and Alla. In 1880, SueAnna Wishard gave her mother's place of birth as Alabama, as well as her own.

A letter, dated 18 Mar 1954, found in a family tree on Ancestry was written by a niece of Richard Moon's and this is what is described with a note apparently added by another family member: Mama's brother Dick (Richard Moon, 1833 - 1862) had two children. Sol (Solomon D. Moon, 1857 - 1942) and Lue (Mary Lue, 1860 - 1937). Uncles Dick's widow (Olive E. Jenkins, 1836 - before 1880) carried cousin Sol and cousin Lue to Florida. They both married and reared families. I visited them both in Florida before I married. Cousin Sol had an orange grove. Cousin Lue lived in a city. (Note: I believe Olive E. Jenkins died before 1880 and did not move to Florida. She married Stewart Wishard abt 1870, and he's shown as a widower on the 1880 census in Madison County, Alabama. Her son, Sol, is living with Polley Esslinger age 74, Sallie Esslinger age 72, and Elizabeth Paltz age 52, and Mary Lue is married to George Bunyan Kirksey who died about 1895. In 1896, she's married to Capius C. Willis and they are shown on the 1900 census living in Florida. GY)

1870 Census, Madison Co, Alabama.

Sabrina age 10, b. Iowa. Susan, age 4, born Iowa. Willy age 2, b. AL
Solomon Moon age 12 and Mary Moon age 10, b. AL.

Ancestry.com Family tree had the family of Richard Moon and Olive Elvira Jenkins - they married 28 Sep 1854 in Madison Co AL and had two children:
Solomon D. Moon - 1856-1942
Mary L. Moon - 1860-1937
The database does show her second marriage to Stewart Wishard, but no exact date. There is also a picture of a grave marker for Pvt. Richard Moon, Co. E, 37 Tenn Inf CSA and dates 1832-1862. There are in fact markers for four Moons, died in the Battle of Stones River [Second Battle of Murfreesboro] with this note:
Four Moons together in Co E 37th Tn Inf, Hardees Corps. All Killed 31 Dec 1862 - the other Moons apparently were not brothers of Richard.

The battle noted above was the third major battle of the war. From Wikipedia:
Total casualties in the battle were 28,878: 12,906 on the Union side and 14,439 for the Confederates. Considering that only about 76,400 men were engaged, this was the highest percentage of killed and wounded of any major battle in the Civil War, higher in absolute numbers than the infamous bloodbaths at Shiloh and Antietam earlier that year.
Maj. Gen. William J. Hardee led the initial attack at dawn on December 31, 1862, and drove the Union troops back three miles. Fighting continued through January 3rd - the battle ultimately inconclusive, although the Confederates withdrew first. as they knew the Union forces were to be reinforced and they were down to about 20,000 men.

From a book on the history of Citrus County, Florida, titled "Back Home" by Hampton Dunn, published with no date.
On page 286 in the 7th paragraph it states:

In politics, Sol D. Moon, a real estate dealer and farmer from Floral City, defeated the incumbent, Dr. W.B. Moon, of Crystal River, for State Representative by the narrow margin of 12 votes. Sol Moon issued a brief autobiography after his election: "Born in Madison County North Alabama, on Oct. 16, 1857. Came to Florida in 1882, where I settled and started farming. Married a Florida girl, a Miss Powell, on March 6, 1894, and have raised three boys, R.R. Moon, 44; R.E. Moon, 41; and F.E. Moon 39. My school record is not much, as I only attended school about 15 months and a country school at that. Therefore most of what little education I've succeeded in getting has come through experience and hard knocks. I am not a member of any church, but I am affiliated with F.&A.M. Lodge #133. Member of State Democratic Exceutive Committee for six years, and Chairman of County Committe for 10 years. At present my business is that of real estate broker."

Sol Moon died unexpectedly on Christmas Day, 1942. He was 86 years old and enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest Mason in Citrus County in point of service.

His house still stands today in Floral City and is one of the oldest in the community.

30 Sep 1890 Affidavit of William J. Moon age 32 years of Floral City, Citrus Co, FL. Mr. Moon stated he had known Mr. Wishard since 1866. He must have been kin to Solomon in some way, though not likely a son.

Mary Moon married George B. Kirksey, 19 Sep 1878 in Madison Co AL. She married second to Capius C. Willis, Citrus Co, Florida, 16 Sep 1896. She died in Escambia Co, FL, 1937.
