WILLIAM THOMAS COREY , REV.
(15 Oct 1829 - 16 Sep 1896)
As a young man he was active in the New Canaan Baptist Church. He was licensed to preach there in June 1859, and ordained on 3 Nov 1860, when he became the minister of the church. In 1852-3 he was the contractor for building the "New" New Canaan Baptist Church. Blois Corey says he "became a successful minister." He was later descibed as "one of the well-known Baptist Divines of early days who held pastorates in Moncton and Hillsboro."
As a young man he was called "Long Will" because he was a champion standing long jumper.
His first wife Sarah Elizabeth Fowler, is connected with the legacy that made possible the building of the present Baptist Church in New Canaan, as descibed in Blois Corey, Early New Canaan Settlers, p. 69. His second wife was the daughter of William Wallace, Collector of Customs in Hillsboro. He appears in the Havelock 1891 census, his occupation given as "Minister." [Corey Book]
