Individual Details

JACOB CLARKE COREY

(3 Oct 1822 - 14 Mar 1897)

Jacob Corey operated a store in Coles Island NB, his occupation in the 1861 census given as "trader and farmer." In 1861 he gave his age as 38, in 1871 as 45. According to grandson Blois Corey, he moved to New Canaan between 1866 and 1868, to take over the farm from his father. E. Stone Wiggins writes, "Jacob Esq., merchant at Cole's Island, whose farm in New Canaan is one of the finest in Queen's County, is owner of the well-known cranberry marsh on the North Forks of the Canaan River, known as Corey Lake. His crop of cranberries last year (1875) when picked, amounted to seven hundred bushels." Jacob lived out the rest of his life on the New Canaan farm, lot 13 of the old grant.

Jacob's sister, Susan, lived with this family until she was at least 46 years of age, a single woman.

Jacob's marriage record refers to him as "Clarke Corey" and this seems to be the only reference to his middle name.

Amy's death notice reads:

Mrs. Jacob Corey (known as Aunt Amy) died as her home, Canaan, age 95 years. She had been in bed of paralysis for 14 years. Feb 4th, Buried at Coles Is, Tues. Feb 7th. Services at Home at 9 A.M. Len Keith with his auto truck then took the remains to Coles Is. Rev. Wm Bonney attended services going to Canaan. Mrs. Max Hicks Diary, Havelock.

The gravestone at Coles Island reads,

"Jacob Corey/ 1822-1897/ Amy C. Starkey/ His Wife/ 1832-1928."

Another obituary gives this information on Amy's ancestry:

Mrs Corey was in early life a teacher. She was a member of the New Canaan Baptist Church and took an active interest in its work. She was the daughter of James Starkey, who was a son of Mordecai Starkey, a member of a Loyalist New Jersey Regiment in the American Revolution.

Amy Corey has a special place in the history of New Canaan. Her recollections of the early settlers of New Canaan were recorded and published by her son Rowland Hill Corey, and these reminiscences now form the basis of much modern research into early life in New Canaan.
