ROWLAND HILL COREY

(31 Dec 1864 - 7 May 1947)

Rowland worked on the farm at New Canaan with his father Jacob, and after Jacob's death took over the farm. In 1906 he purchased the other half of lot 13, and continued to farm there until 1928, when he sold the farm to his son, Blois. He then moved to Young's Cove Road , where he operated a store until his retirement. After retirement he moved to Sussex NB. He was a Deacon of the Baptist Church, and a member of the Orange Lodge. He was also a Justice of the Peace for many years.

Rowland m. (1) Bessie Secord, the ceremony performed by his brother, Wallace Corey. In 1930 he m. (2) a widow, Carolyn (Starkey) Barton. They retired to Sussex NB.

Rowland is best remembered now for his book, Historical Sketch of the First Settlers of New Canaan, which he published in 1946. His book recorded the recollections of his mother, Amy, recorded at a much earlier date, of life in Nineteenth Century New Canaan. Although based almost entirely on family tradition, this has proven to be a valuable contribution to our knowledge of early New Canaan families. [Corey Book]
