JACOB "BLOIS" COREY

(3 Oct 1902 - 4 Apr 1996)

Blois explains his unusual name, saying that his grandmother Amy "named me after some person in history -- who he was, I don't know."

Blois was born in New Canaan, and lived there all of his very long life "on Lot #13 in the same house from 1906 to 1978, and still lives in sight of that home and his birth place." As a young man he wanted to enter the teaching profession, but a speech impediment made that impractical. He then planned to attend University, and completed his entrance qualifications to university, but in 1928, when his father offered to sell the farm to him, he accepted, thus ending and thought of furthering an academic career.

Blois operated the farm most of his adult life. However, in the mid-1920s he began to show an interest in New Brunswick's logging industry, and to that end, opened logging camps in the New Canaan area. Later he opened a saw mill near Macdonald's bridge, which he operated until 1978.

He became Clerk of the New Canaan Baptist Church in 1934, and held that position for 55 years. In 1947 he was appointed Deacon.

"Retirement began," Blois writes, "when I sold 'the mill' at seventy-six years of age, after fifty-four years in the lumber industry and thirty -eight years of operating a farm."

Blois Corey is perhaps the most prominent citizen of New Canaan in the Twenieth Century. Through most of his long life he was a farmer, lumber camp and saw mill owner, and Clerk and Deacon of his Church. In 1990 he and his wife Dorothy Clark erected a fine granite memorial in New Canaan bearing the names of the first New Canaan settlers. In 1992 he published New Canaan Early Settlers: The Ancestors of Our Community and Church and Reminiscences. This is a valuable addition to the growing literature on the community and settlers of New Canaan.

His obituary lists many of his awards and accomplishments:

In 1979 he was made an Honorary director of the Maritime Lumber Bureau. during his farming years he was a member of the Holstein Breeders Association and was a Past President of that Association. He served as a clerk in the United Baptist Church in the community for 55 years and was appointed an Honorary Deacon after serving as a Deacon for 41 years. He also served the community as a School Trustee for many years. He was honoured as a recipient of one of Canada's 125th Birthday commemorative medals for contributing significantly to his community. He was elected a County Councillor for the Parish of Brunswick in 1944 until the system was abolished in 1966. He was County Warden four of those years and served on various committees. He also was vice-President of the Children's Aid Society for Queens County, Director of Purdy-Macdonald Children's Foundation and an Honorary President of Fundy Royal Progressive-Conservative Association. In April 1994 the New Brunswick PC Association honored him with a life membership. He became a member of Fownes Masonic Lodge #45 F & AM in 1926, and was also a member of Walton Royal Arch Masons #12 of Salisbury, Ivanhoe Branch of Moncton and Luxor Temple Shriners of Saint John. He was also a member of N.B. Royal Orange Lodge.

Dorothy died on 14 Jan 1994, with her funeral on 17 Jan 1994, and burial later in the New Canaan Cemetery. Her death announcement gives the following information: "Dorothy was a graduate of the Provincial Normal School in 1931, and she was an active member of the New Canaan United Baptist Church."
