STEPHEN RIDER

(5 Oct 1798 - Aft 1861)

Twin to Mary.

Stephen's land transactions are just about all we know of him. On 15 June 1821 he sold lot 1 at Cody's, though the purchase of the land seems not to have been recorded. On 20 Oct 1821 he wrote asking for a grant at Long Rapids, but apparently did not receive it. The father, Ebenezer Rider, had purchased lots 38-39 of the New Canaan grant (on a now abandoned tract east of the Canaan bridge) to give to his three children, Stephen, Benjamin, and Thomas. On 28 ? 1821 Stephen had these lots transferred to his sole possession. On 11 Sept 1834 Stephen was in New York City (the length of his stay there undetermined) where he obtained a mortgage on lots 38-9 from the British Consul, probably to provide him with funds to return to New Brunswick.

By 1837 he was back in New Canaan, trying to gain possession of land owned by David Phillips, his brother-in-law, husband of Elizabeth Ryder. Stephen said Phillips had abandoned the land, and that he (Stephen) had improved the land by building a new house. Phillips responded by saying that Stephen had taken "forced possession" and "destroyed the house." On 8 Mar 1841 Stephen sold lots 38-9 to his brother Joseph Crandall Rider. And that appears to have been his last land transaction. By 1861, aged 63, he had no land at all, and was living with William Rider, his son, at New Canaan.

He is listed on the Muster Rolls of Capt Keith's Company, September 28, 1846 in a grouping which includes Solomon and William Ryder, and Philip Curry, suggesting the family relationship accepted by this genealogy - that Solomon, William, and Abigail Ryder are Stephen's children. (A separate grouping of Benjamin, Reuben, Henry, and Joseph Ryder confirms that the list was made up with family relationships in mind.)

On Christmas Day 1816 Stephen married Abigail Corey, the marriage witnessed by David Wortman and Jacob Jones, the bride's brother-in-law. Abigail was the daughter of Gideon Corey and Abigail Clarke, and she therefore brings to the Ryder family the Mayflower descent line outlined below.

No record of Stephen and Abigail are to be found in New Brunswick between 1846 and 1861. The 1851 census enumeration for Brunswick Parish, which includes New Canaan, was either not taken or has been lost, and as Stephen seems to have remained in the New Canaan area, this would account for the absence of record. However, a persistent family tradition says that Stephen and Abigail may have returned to the United States, perhaps to New York State, but no record of the has been found. Both Stephen and Abigail were alive and living in New Canaan in 1861, aged 63, but records for them are not found after that year. They are probably buried either in the New Canaan Baptist or Methodist cemeteries.

Despite a long life and long marriage, few children can with certainty be said to be theirs. However, Nellie Rider said they "had three children" and an early Corey descendant recorded that Abigail had "a large family." The children attributed to them in this genealogy are based on the best available evidence.

Mayflower descent

Descendants through this family have Mayflower descent through the line:

WILLIAM WHITE - PEREGRINE WHITE - JONATHAN WHITE - ESTHER WHITE M. JOHN DRAKE - ELIZABETH DRAKE M. THOMAS COREY - GIDEON COREY - ABIGAIL COREY M. STEPHEN RIDER.

William and Peregrine White were the Mayflower passengers. Peregrine's voyage was quite short. He was born aboard the ship at present day Provincetown, and his journey involved only the trip across Cape Cod Bay from Provincetown to Plymouth.
