Individual Details

CAROLINE RIDER

(17 Aug 1818 - )

She was a witness to the marriage of Reuben Ryder and Ann Husteed; in 1861 she is referred to as a widow. Jesse is listed on the Muster Rolls of Capt Keith's Company September 28, 1846.

The son, Azor Mills, lived on the 'road to Coles Island' and is recalled by people still alive in 1990 as something of a character. Blois Corey of New Canaan recalls this story which Azor used to tell about himself: "Once Azor was chasing a bear around a haystack. He was having no luck shooting it until he bent his rifle between the branches of a tree. He fired and went home to bed. Next morning the bullet had caught up and the bear was dead."

This apparently was a widespread folk story. In the 1930s a Hollywood cartoon animated the same incident, with (I think) Felix the Cat as hero.
