JOHN RIDER
(8 Dec 1794 - 12 Mar 1866)
Nicknamed "Giant John," he received a land grant for 51 Block 28 Studholm Parish, Salem NB, where he farmed the rest of his life. His nickname probably indicated an unusual height. One other Ryder, Charles Miles Rider, was at least 6 feet 8 inches in height [see #64 below] - truly a giant amongst men of his generation.
John and Rachel are buried in the Havelock Baptist Cemetery. Their headstones read: "John Ryder/ died/ Mar 12, 1866/ Æt 71" and "Rachel/ wife of John Ryder/ June 15, 1867/ aged 71 years."
John descendants are by far the largest branch of the New Canaan Ryder.
