REUBEN RIDER

(11 Nov 1812 - 20 Sep 1860)

In October 1839 Ebenezer sold "Reuben my son" the east half of lot 28, where Reuben farmed the rest of his life. This is the section of Ebenezer's homestead that has the modern road crossing it, and the county line crossing it, all marking the place with "Xs" on maps.

He married (1) New Canaan 31 July 1838 Ann Husteed, witnessed by Nathan Rider and Charlotte Rider Mills. Ann died before 1851. Beyond the marriage certificate, nothing is known about her. She may be a daughter of Philip Hustid, a United Empire Loyalist, but records to establish that relationship have not been found. There were no known children to this marriage.

He married (2) about 1850 Esther Rider, widow of his brother Joseph. The marriage probably took place at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in New Canaan, where Reuben owned two pews. This Chapel was closed later, and despite searches, the records of the church have not been located. However, in the probate of Reuben's estate, Esther refers to herself as the "widow of Reuben Rider," which confirms the marriage.

Reuben is listed on the Muster Rolls of Capt Keith's Company, September 28, 1846. He is cited in Nellie Rider, residence given as "New Canan, Nova Scotia." This was 'corrected' in Fremont Rider to "New Canaan CT"! As late as 1920 Nellie did not know that New Brunswick had separated from Nova Scotia in 1784. Fremont Rider, who also wrote travel guides, was equally in the dark in 1957.

The probate of Reuben's Will indicates that by 1858 he was suffering from a debilitating illness and by October of that year could no longer work. Unfortunately, Reuben had taken out a loan to improve his farm, but after the onset of his illness, he was unable to make payment. Following his death, Reuben's estate was placed in probate 4 March 1861, and found to be "deficient for the payment of debts ... in the sum of $492.37." The Court "deemed necessary that the whole of the estate ... be sold."

Reuben's illness seems to be consistent with the effects of tuberculosis, from which this family suffered for three generations.

Esther Rider

With Reuben's death, Esther was left with three small children, and a livelihood about to be lost to her by foreclosure. She had to pick up the pieces of her life under most trying conditions, and succeeded well enough.

On 25 April 1862 Esther re-purchased Reuben's estate which had been lost in foreclosure, when "being at New Canaan Bridge, Esther Rider bid the sum of One Hundred and Forty Pounds, and no other person bidding, the same was knocked down to her." Esther swore an affidavit of account in May 1862 in regard to the probate of Reuben's Will, for her care and burial of Reuben. On 5 May 1863 she sold lot 28 to "Mary Catherine Rider," presumably Mary Catherine Tolson, wife of Nathan Rider, for Two Hundred Pounds. And on 19 June 1863 she sold her dower interest in Joseph's farm at lot 27. No record of her after that date has yet been found. It is presumed that Esther and her son Norman were liquidating their New Canaan assets, in order that Norman might buy a sawmill at Wheaton Settlement, which he subsequently did.

It is also presumed that Esther moved her family to Wheaton Settlement, where she died. By 1871 her youngest children, Unity and Mark, were living with Norman in Wheaton Settlement, suggesting that Esther died before her 52nd year. Esther's place of burial is not known.

Following her death Esther's youngest children, Unity and Mark, were cared for by her eldest child, Norman (See Fam#33). Esther's children by Joseph Crandall Rider are listed under Fam#11.

Reuben Rider and Esther have many descendants at the present time, but not under the name of Ryder. However, they bear Mayflower descent through pilgrims William White, William Brewster, and Stephen Hopkins. The line has been proven through William Brewster.
