Individual Details
UNITY RYDER
(1853 - C1920S)
William Wortman was descended from a UEL family originally from Pennsylvania. His date of death is not known, though he lived a full life, died Winnipeg MB, and is buried there.
According to the Winnipeg 1891 census, shortly after their marriage in 1874, William and Unity moved briefly to the United States, said to have been "near Boston." [Noel Wortman] They returned to New Brunswick by 1878, but moved permanently to Winnipeg Manitoba about 1882. William Wortman was a machinist and worked in the CPR repair yards in Winnipeg.
A picture of Unity Wortman taken about 1920 shows a stern woman dressed from head to foot in traditional black. She is recalled by a grandchild as "remote, traditional, conservative, and held in awe by the family." Judging from the picture, this as an apt description.
Descendants of this family still flourish in the Winnipeg area; however, some members of the family are known to have moved to Santa Ana and Santa Barbara, California.
