Individual Details

WILLIAM B. RYDER

(1827 - )

This family farmed first at New Canaan, where William appears on the Muster Rolls of Capt Keith's Company September 28 1846. Later the family moved to "Campbell's Settlement" described by Manchester Ryder as "four or five miles from Coles Island off the Canaan Road." It was there that most of his family were reared. At the time of her death in 1900 Caroline was living at 60 Metcalf St. Saint John NB.

A persistent family tradition says that William Ryder had either lived or travelled to the United States. A note in family possession says, "I saw a basket my grandfather (William Ryder) brought from New York at the time of the Civil War." However, the ages of his children, all believed to have been born in New Brunswick, would not suggest that the sojourn into the United States was anything more than a visit.
