JOHN RIDER
(4 Dec 1636 - 5 Jan 1706)
When history leaves a man alone, when he lives happily, marries happily, and dies in his allotted time, there is little to say about him. So it is with this son of Samuel, and so it will be with the grandson in the next generation. According to James W. Hawes, John Rider "is mentioned as surveyor of highways in Yarmouth June 5, 1677. He was on a jury of inquest Oct 21, 1677, and on a grand jury June 6, 1682. In 1676 his tax was 2 pounds 14 shillings, 9 pence. In the record of the May town meeting in 1678 he was called "John Rider, Sr." He was among the freemen of Yarmouth in 1684. His will dated March 6, 1702, and proved Feb. 19, 1705, speaks of himself as "John Ryder, Sr." and mentions sons Ebenezer (who was appointed executor), John and Joseph, and daughters Hannah, Lydia and Thankful. The inventory of this estate, amounting to 199 pounds, 13 shillings, 1 penny, was taken Feb. 6, 1705/06, by Peter Thacher and Joseph Hawes."
The descending child in our line is John3 Rider.
