JOHN RIDER

(1664 - Bef 11 Feb 1718/19)

This John Rider lived out his life at or near his grandfather's original land grant in Yarmouth. And like his father, there is little to say about him. He married Hester, probable daughter of John Hall, Jr. As Hawes sums it up, "his estate was settled July 7, 1721, he being called John Rider, Sr. in the record, when it appeared that the inventory amouted to 416 pounds, 15 shillings, 4 pence, and that his debts due from the estate had been presented by Samuel Ryder, his second son and administrator, to the sum of 64 pounds, 5 shillings, 4 pence, leaving 352 pounds, 10 shillings to be divided among the following nine children (John, the eldest son having received his double portion in his father's lifetime): Samuel, who had the real estate, Bethiah Eldridge, Ester Smith, Mercy Ryder, Zerviah (Zeruiah) Ryder, Nathaniel Ryder, Hannah Ryder, Thankful Ryder, Martha Ryder."

He died interstate before Feb 1718, when letters of administration were granted to his son Samuel and his brother Ebenezer.

The descending child in our line is John4 Rider.

Nellie Rider comments: "Former town clerk Davis of Yarmouth has transposed the wife and fam. of this John, placing them as the fam. of John, son of Zachariah, of Yarmouth." Some records give "Esther" instead of "Hester", and John's birth date as 1608, instead of 1664. John died intestate before 1718-19:Fe11, when letters of administration were granted to his son Samuel and his brother Ebenezer. (a) His estate was settled 1721:Jy7, (b) he being called John Ryder, Sr., in the record, when it appeared that the inventory amounted to 416 pounds, 15 shillings, 4 pence, and that debts due from the estate had been presented by Samuel Ryder, his second son and administrator, to the sum of 64 pounds, 5 shillings, 4 pence, leaving 352 pounds, 10 shillings to be divided among the following nine children (John, the eldest son, having received his double portion in his father's lifetime); Samuel, who had the real estate; Bethiah Eldredge, Esther Smith, Mercy Rider, Zerviah (Zeruiah) Ryder, Nathaniel Ryder, Hannah Ryder, Thankful Ryder, Martha Ryder.
