ZACHARIAH (ZACHARY) RIDER

In 1668 "Zachary Rider the 1st born of the English at Yarmouth complained that Richard Berry had stolen his axe." [Otis] He died 5 Sep 1685 "by a gunshot in Training." [Rider to Ryder Book]

(and three other daus. according to his will). His name is frequently given as Zachary. Savage records that he was given a special grant of land as the father of the first white boy b. in Yarmouth, Ms.

His wife was a widow, her maiden name and date of mar. are unknown. A lengthy abstract from his will is given in the "Mayflower" (11:53).

In or about 1674 he bought the lands of Abram Darby. His Tax in 1676 was 3 pounds, 15 shillings. He was one of the freemen of Yarmouth recorded at the May meeting in 1678. Je3, 1679, he was on the grand jury. He was among the freeman of Yarmouth in 1684. He died September. His death was caused by the accidental discharge of a gun at a training. His will proved about 1685-6:Mr1 recites that he was "very sorely wounded, " mentions his wife Mary, sons Zachariah and John, four daughters (of whom only Mary is named) and makes his wife executrix. (Barnstable Co. Prob. Recds:2:14). The inventory of his estate, amouting to 203 pounds, 2 shilling, 6 pence, was taken by his brother Joseph Ryder and two others. His widow married Edward Sturgis.
