BENJAMIN RIDER

(Aft 1630 - )

[Below is from Fremont Rider Book:
Unfortunately, with this Benjamin, at the very start of the main Rider line in this country, we enter areas of uncertainly, or complete lack of knowledge. We know that he married a second time but we do not know the name of this wife. We strongly suspect that this Benjamin is the son of Samuel, the immigrant ancestor, but proof of this is lacking. And, finally, we have record of only one child although there is every likelihood that there were several. This child, Benjamin, is thus referred to in Benjamin, Sr.'s will (dated 1679): "and in case that my son Benjamin die without heire naturally begotten of his holy."

Savage explains that the sheet of town records bearing the names of Benjamin's children has been torn out. (v.4,p.697); and no other source has as yet filled this gap. There may be hundreds of present-day Riders descending from this Benjamin, but the vital link of proof is lacking.

We know that this Benjamin Rider was a soldier in Gorham's co. in King Philip's War. He was living in 1698. At a proprietor's meeting 1703:Je17 he had lands granted him. (Freeman:Annals of Truro. p.544) The ascription of Samuel Ryder, 1700 and Gerhom Ryder, 170? to the parentage of Benjamin Rider, 163? is at present purely hypothetical and not even altogether probable.
