SAMUEL RIDER

He was a cooper at Plymouth, Ms. He left 13 ch. by 2 wives. Regarding his wives there was originally much confusion but "Mayflower" (11:182-4) straightened them out. He m. his 1st. wife 1656. On 1660-61:Mr20 he sold Robt. Hansome, of Plymouth, his house and 25 acres of upland at Monomet Ponds.

He d. 1715:Jy18 aged about 85. In July 1660 Samuel bought of Samuel Eddy certain land at Manomett Ponds. The record says: Samuel Eddy, Senr. of the town of Plymouth, Taylor, a valuable sum to his already payed by Samuell Ryder, Junr of the Town of Plymouth --Planter hath freely sold .. all parcell of land lying at Manomett Ponds in the township of Plymouth nears Thomas Clarke's ffarme containing twenty and five acres of upland ranging betwixt a small brooke on the southerly side along the sea...also a acre of meadow called Little Meddow...the said Samuell Eddy sould to the said Samuell Ryder...and is satisfied for it." Later a question of the title to this land was raised and it was voted:

At a Towne meeting held att the meetinghouse att Plymouth the 16th day of ffebruary Anno Dom. 1673, whereas notwithstanding for what upon serch is or can be found in the records of the Court for the Jurisdiction of New Plymouth. The land which Samuell Ryder bought of Samuell Eedey lying att Manomet Ponds in the Townshipp of Plymouth: is found to be Comon and att the Towns dispose: The Town have granted unto the said Samuell Ryder all their Right Interest in the said land, which is twenty five acres of land lying att Manomet Ponds aforesaid as it is now bounded and in the possession of him the said Samuell Ryder." Plymouth Co. Deeds:11:51 records deeds to his sons Samuel and Benjamin (p. 184-5) and other deeds (p. 170-2). He was a member of the Plymouth, Ms, Ch. Samuel Rider appears to have moved from Yarmouth to Plymouth about the time of his marriage to Sarah Bartlett in 1656. Davis mentions him as the first Samuel in Plymouth. 1658 June 1 On list of freemen in Plymouth. 1659 Was Survey at Plymouth. 1659 Was on Coroners Jury. 1660 June 6 Was on Grand Inquest. The name Rider is still perpetuated in Plymouth by "Riders Orchard" a tract near Cooks Pond early granted to John Rider. Cape Mass. Plymouth Rec. 1678 Nov 11 Samuel Rider took the oath of allegience in Boston - administered by Hon. John Liverett Esq. - Governor. Mass. Records.
