Individual Details

Henry Culp

(20 Sep 1809 - 11 Jul 1879)

MIGRATION: Henry moved with his parents from Rockingham Co., VA in the fall of 1831 to Logan Co., Ohio, arriving sometime before their wedding on 15 December 1831. He and Mary later migrated from Logan Co., Ohio to Union Co., Illinois. County property records indicate that they first bought land on September 20 - 21, 1847. This initial 80 acre tract was purchased for a dollar an acre. Their first son, David, bought an adjoining 80 acre tract in 1857 for five dollars an acre. Henry sold their property to his sons Marshall (1872 - $17.50 an acre) and David (1877 - $15.00 an acre). The tract sold to David was twice as large as the tract sold to Marshall. The eighty acres eventually ended up with Thomas Jefferson Culp. Thomas Jefferson was the only child of James R. Culp, one of Henry's sons. After James was killed in action during the Civil War at the Battle of Belmont, Henry became the legal guardian of Thomas Jefferson until 1877. Henry and Mary were of the Dunkard faith.

BURIAL: Henry and Mary are buried side-by-side in the Water Valley Cemetery in Union County, Illinois. Their son, the Rev. David Culp and his wife Martha are buried nearby (tombstone photographs available).

The dates of birth shown for the family members do not exactly agree with the 1850 Census.
